Question About Nutri Cal? Question for you guys...how often do you give your Yorkie Nutri Cal? Katie Scarlett is 5 months old and I usually give her a wee bit every morning after our morning grooming session. It is kind of her 'treat' for being a good girl while I brush, do top knot, and put on her sweater. She always sits so still and is a good girl if she knows I have the Nutri Cal waiting. I would say I give her no more than 1/8 of a teaspoon every morning. Is this bad? Do I need to stop doing this? If so, what is something I could substitute for that little treat after morning grooming? She gets her spoon of yogurt each day after our evening grooming session and that is her 'treat' then. I just have found this is a way to motivate her into being a good girl and it has worked wonders for us. But I do not want to be harming her. Any input/advice? |
Aymee I hope someone with more knowledge comes on soon, but....When we first adopted Jada, I was terrified of her blood sugar dropping and she wasn't eating that well. I started giving her just a little bit of nutri-cal daily on her food, just to get her to eat. It is loaded with calories and it packed about 2lbs on her small frame very quickly. For that reason alone I wouldn't give it daily. It also has taken me about a year and a half to get most of that 2lbs off of her. She has LP in both back knees and added weight is not good for her joints. As for treats...my two will take your hand off for a frozen green bean.:D |

Mine like tiny bits of apple too and occasionally bits of carrot, but their favorite is green beans. IDK why they love them so much and DH says it is like we are giving them bits of steak instead of a plain ole green bean. Just make sure they are not the canned beans as they are loaded with sodium. |

On the carrots, do I give little pieces or can I give a baby carrot? Also, on the apples, is it ok to have the skin on it or do I peel that off before cutting into small pieces? Also, would cheerios be a good treat too? At puppy class, Katie Scarlett seems intrigued by the trainers pocket of cheerios. |
Send Ladyjane a pm about the nutrical. She can explain it better than I can. |
I don't give Nutrical daily. I only give it if I think my girls have had a drop in blood sugar. As far as Yorkieusa's advice on talking to Ladyjane, I can't think of a more knowledgeable person to help you out! Believe me, she has come to my rescue more than once! |

As for apples, you need to peel them and absolutely no seeds they are toxic!!! I would be afraid to give a whole baby carrot because of the choking hazard, I usually just cut it up into bite size pieces. |
Thanks guys! You all are the biggest help!!! I don't know what I would do without ya! |
My 3 love greenbeans but if Ziva has one too many she will puke up clear yellow bile the next day. No big deal once the groomer said confidentally "too much greens" but it was concerning when it started and we were going to start testing. She can have two beans but not three - Abby doesn't seem to have a limit! |
Once a Yorkie is 4 pounds, they should be able to regulate their blood sugar. Joey never needed Nutri-cal, it's best to know the symptoms of hypoglycemia, and treat with Nutri-cal or Karo syrup if they are experiencing low blood sugar. You know how you give a piece of candy or a glass of orange juice to a diabetic if they have an attack of low blood sugar, this is the same thing. Nutri-cal is mainly sugar (corn syrup) and you don't want to give it to "prevent" hypoglycemia, but to treat it. Protein should always be given within 20 minutes. Too much Nutri-cal can cause an attack of low blood sugar, so be careful how you use it. Here's some information on the symptoms of hypoglycemia, or low blood sugar. Toy Breed Hypoglycemia |

I will definitely no longer give it to her after the morning grooming. I will swap to something else and only keep the Nutri Cal on hand for emergencies. |
I've never given my yorkies Nutri-cal. I've always had it on hand when getting a new puppy, but have never actually needed to give it. The only Nutri-cal ZoE's ever had was the bit her breeder gave to her before the long drive to bring her home. For treats, we use all the ones suggested above...cooked carrots, greenbeans & peas for veggies, and apple, watermelon, banana for fruits. ZoE's also had frozen greek yogurt, or a lil peanut butter in her Kong. |
The day after I brought my baby home I noticed something was just not right for an 8 week old puppy. I did some research (how I found this site) and read about the low blood sugar. Having never owned a yorkie before I of course did not have anything on hand. I gave her a small amount of kayro syrup (I babysit from home- always have that on hand) within 20 minutes she was a whole new dog and has been ever since. I talked to my groomer and my vet and they both said by doing this I saved her life. She did not come from the best home. Anyhow, on the snacks, mine hates carrots but will do everything but say her ABC's for a cheerio. People make fun of me cause I always have a pocket full. The great thing about this is since I babysit and have small kids all the time, snack for the dog, snack for the kid. All toddlers like cherrios! She gets green beans and bananas and fruit when we are home but I always have a stash of cereal somewhere close when we are not. |
Oh my, I don't give treats to Prissy,,,we spoiled Yoshi terribly with treats and now he expects them..Prissy eats really well and I honestly don't think she is missing anything..Should I be giving her treats? |
