Tell me it will be ok Last year my DD wanted a shih tzu DD is married and does not live with us. I did all the research and found a really good breeder not to far away. That alone took a year. Well my husband fell in love with DD's Shih Tzu, and her with him. He loves our Yorkie Pistol to death, and they are close. Now where I need some encouragement and advise. DH has talked to the Shih Tzu breeder and they have a litter due next week, DH wants to buy a female from this litter,( if they have a one) for us. As a family we have all stayed in touch with this breeder. Money wise there is no problem. we can afford all care. My problem is Pistol is jealous. If I love on another dog he will run to that dog jumping at it, barking and caring on. I have to pick him up and hold on to him till he calms down. He only does this with me no one else. I am willing to consult a behaviorist if need be, but would like input from my YT family. Is another pup a good idea ? How would my YT family handle this ? |
Since the shih tzu puppies will be born next week you will have time to work with your male yorkie. Try to either go to doggie classes so he can get better socialized or dog parks if your comfortable with that . Reward him when he behaves , don't pick him up when he is naughty , ignore him or turn him around and walk the other direction. Choose a female puppy when the time is right, i have heard that males/female's will get along better with each other. I also have a yorkie/and a shih tzu , she is so sweet . We love her to pieces. my yorkie does not have a problem with her , but we had Suzi a whle year before bringing hom our shih tzu , the Shi tzu is more mild mannered then our yorkie , and has even learned things from our yorkie . Suzi our yorkie is now 3 1/5 and Miely our shih tzu is 2 1/5 . I think that since your shih Tzu is going to be a little puppy and your yorkie is a adult he may not be so aggressive/jealous of the pup. |
Pistol is very well socialized he goes every where with us, dog park, walking path at two local parks, camping, lowes, auto zone. You name it if he's allowed in he goes. He always has. He never has a problem with another dog unless I am lovin on it. He will be three years old in february and has been an only dog now for one year since we lost our miniature poodle that I delivered myself fourteen years prior. They never had a problem together, they would both snuggle on m lap. This only happens if I show attention to another dog. |
I was always afraid to bring a second dog home. I was worried my dog would get profoundly depressed. I did not want her to change. She hated other dogs, and got very upset when my husband or I would interact with a dog. It really hit home one day, when I was down on the ground kissing the pug across the street. My yorkie was glaring at me. She promptly walked into the house and took crap right in the middle of the kitchen floor! This was something she NEVER did, and I got the message. We still laugh about that to this day. |
I have a shih tuz that I love dearly and then I added my little Remy. The play and get along very well... maybe I am just lucky!! |
I hope you get some good advice. My lil girl is jealous, too, if I pet or hug another little dog. Otherwise, she loves other dogs.;) |
Well, maybe your dog does not want you to be so close to a dog that he does not feel is part of his family. When you bring the puppy home and make your little guy realize that it is now a family member (or pack member) he will learn to be accepting of it. I'm sure it will take some careful socializing on your part. Maybe let your husband do the majority of the handling at first and slowly work your way into it. He was once good with another dog so I would think he will accept another one if the puppy is brought into the family in a way he can accept it. |
I have 5 furbabies here and all of them have their issues with each other from time to time. They also have jealousy issues from time to time and sometimes it gets ugly but I handle it. I correct them and they are ok. It kills me how they go from wanting to beat each other up to loving on each other in a matter of minutes. |

I have no dogs. My baby died last year on December 12th. She was 15. I miss her like crazy. I understand what you are saying. I did not want her personality to change. I was fearful of that. Also, she was such a snob and set in her ways. I just did not want to rock the boat :) |

Well, I certainly hope that for the both of you :) I was very fortunate. I had two yorkies die on me very young. I am so afraid to select my next dog...I hope she will be healthy... |
