Stolen Puppy Epidemic? So, I heard that tonight on Inside Edition they are going to talk about an epidemic of stolen puppies. They showed a clip of someone stealing yorkie puppies from someones house. This makes me think of the breeder that I got Jimmy from a couple months ago actually had me meet her at her moms house rather than her own house. After getting Jimmy I read on YT that it's a bad sign if you pick your puppy up from anywhere else besides the breeders house. I did research, after the fact, on the breeder and they have been breeding yorkies for years and I read nothing bad about them. After seeing the Inside Edition blurb this morning I started to think I would do the same thing and not let anyone know where my puppies actually lived. What are your thoughts on the stolen puppy thing and if you're a breeder, do you still let strangers know where you live given that people are getting really brazen? |
I heard ppl are stealing these dogs and selling them on craigslist. I forget which news channel I saw it on. They said to beware of really low cost yorkies on CL - they may be stolen. |
I saw this on the news a few days ago, I still let people come to my home, when one or more of the men of the house is here, and I make sure they also meet MR. NIKO... LOL, he is my son's alaskan malamute and he owns the yard and don't like strangers..LOL http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p...m/IMG_5986.jpg hugs, |
my address is always the last thing discussed when someone is coming to see the pups... i also try to talk to them on their landline phone at some point prior to visiting- i usually just say, 'instead of emailing, shall i call you for a few mins on your landline (mobile out of credit) or point blank say 'can i have your landline number for my records' and double check it against the phone book- if it isbnt there (hasnt happened yet) id call the number to see who answers, then explain why i called! and i always walk them to the door when they leave, and usually get a wee glimpse at the car reg number- i don't memorise it, just familiarise myself a little... i stay with the pups literally 24/7 untill they go- so if someone wants to take them, they'd have to shoot me first! my girls are the most important thing to me- i never take chances when it come to the kids (the furry ones- dont have any people ones) same with leaving the adults outside shops- i just cant; im scared enough leaving them unsupervised in the garden sometimes! and as carmen says- i intend on having a big dog in the foreseeable future, so I'll have a bodyguard for me and the kids! (although if your son gets bored of niko just send him this way... but take it i'd have to fight you all for him!? lol) |

Seems so sad since there are so many dogs in the pounds that need need homes. Anyway, this is one of the reasons I microchipped Joey, I just couldn't stand the thought of someone else claiming that he was theirs. |
For every dog that's stolen, there are a million of homes burglarized, but only dog napping makes the news because it gets more attentions. Always watch out for your dogs and NEVER leave them outside unattended! If you are a breeder, then you should have an alarm system and home security camera, and maybe a couple Rotties. :D I wouldn't get paranoid, but I would always keep in mind that "it's better to be safe than sorry". ;) |
I dont think its off epidemic amounts either I think it is we just hear more about it now. On our news though it said the police are taking it alot more seriously than in the past because of the investment of the cost of the dog. They also gave tips on how to keep your pet safe |
Yup there was another thread about this I think in the breeder's section. It made for an interesting read. I own 2 big dogs and one Yorkie, and my guard attack cat. (J.K). But even still I'm looking at getting a security camera system, and outside proximity lights. A pretty valid point was made, that by the time one would allow someone to visit the house, several conversations have taken place, and a puppy application is filled in. This among many other things will list their home addy and phone numbers, along with vet reference. If I felt uncomfortable about allowing these folks in my home, I truly doubt I'd feel comfortable allowing them to have a pup of mine. |
Exactly what i was thinking. I'd want to get to know the people before I ever gave them my address. I don't know why all people don't get security systems. It's not too expensive for monthly monitoring, and the piece of mind is priceless. We are thinking about getting cameras too. |
There's certainly a trade-off, but, I have never regretted "not" socializing my Dogs as many do. They both are very territorial and protective, and will not let a stranger pick them up. Actually we play games to make them dodge and run, if someone reaches for them. And get VERY suspicious of anyone "sweet talking" them. I count very heavily (at my age) on their alertness and vigorous barking, when anything comes close to the house. I do have a command for "allow" for the Groomer and Vet, but those two are about the only "strangers" who handle mine. I'd much rather people think I had "aggressive" dogs, rather than have just anyone come up and be able to make off with them. PS: I have a security system that's infallible, and works 24/7/365 reliably. Their pictures are at the top left of this Post :D |
I wont even put the yorkie sticker or magnet on my car. I'm afraid that the "robber" will know there is a cutie in the house. Even like lawn ornaments and flags, I put them in the backyard. |

This scares me in general.... stolen yorkies(dogs). I'm always on the lookout for anything(cyotes, people, hawks) when I'm in the yard, especially at night. |
How frightening to think about this! .I think I need to Dinky right now! |
