picky eater Friday Furgie only ate once, yesterday she ate 3 times, nothing today. So annoying! She loves cheese and had a only a couple little pieces earlier, but she is so fussy! We have gone through different dog foods in our year of having Furgie. We were with taste of the wild for a while and then she just would not eat it at all anymore. So we now go with natures variety instinct and are between kibble/wet food/ raw medallions....it says that it is meant to change things up, which we do and she has been fine with this. Last time we were at the vet when Furgie was sick about a month ago I had told the vet how picky Furgie was and we changed our food. He said not to do that often cause it will create a monster....sometimes we have to tough it out and she will eat when she is hungry. Just wondering do you have times when your furbaby just won't eat anything? What do you guys do? |
It does make them more picky to switch food every time they don't eat. Giving them human food can make them not want to eat dog food too or giving them to many treats. Callie normally is not picky but sense her surgery she has not wanted to eat so I went to hand feeding her which most of the time works but when it didn't and she would eat nothing I admit I went to the closet and pulled out a sample of another food I had but if a dog is completely healthy when choosing not to eat although hard I would suggest trying to stick it out especially if its only for one day. |
Yup, sounds like she's got you trained! I love giving some variety, but not if it's too the point where he's flat out refusing food. I used to do this - he didn't eat for one day and "oh, he doesn't like it!" and go out and buy something new. Now I rotate after every bag or every two bags but he's not expecting something new every time he refuses to eat. My picky eater has turned into a very good eater actually! I can tell when he really like a particular kibble or is just okay about it... so it's an added bonus if he likes it! It came to a point where I just decided on scheduled meals and he adjusted super well. I usually give him kibble mixed with some wet food for his breakfast- he's typically not a big eater in the mornings, so the only way he will eat then is with something mixed in. Sometimes I'll give some of the remainder left in the afternoon, sometimes we do our long walks then so he comes inside hungry. Other times, I pour the rest in his bowl and he eats it all around 6pm or so. |
Nope. My dogs aren't really picky because we don't play the "food games" here. The little one is offered food twice a day. She gets one kind of kibble. If she doesn't eat (which is rare), then it's her loss. If she asks for a third meal, she is allowed to have it because she is skinny. The other one - he can be picky. He didn't finish his breakfast this morning. So it got picked up and put on the counter. Guess what he's getting for dinner... And also guess how many treats/human food he is going to get until he finishes his meal.. ZERO. I just don't have the time or energy to make my pups eat. They're smart. They'll eat when they're very hungry. |
Sadie was a extremely picky eater....i tried just about every (good) dog food out there....she would take one bite then walk away....We got another furbutt...and started feeding Merricks Grammies pot pie....now she is TOO good and eater! LOL... |
One of the "fond" memories of my childhood (age 5 or so) is that of my hating green peas and being forced to eat them, which one day resulted in my not on purpose vomitting them into my plate and my father handing me a spoon. Just one of many dinner table battles and when I had my own kids, I vowed that meals would be a HAPPY time and I cooked what they liked. Years later, after watching all of my dogs succumb one by one to cancer, dumping weight to the point where they were nearly skin and bones and had to be carried to the vet for the final solution, I gladly play the food game with Smokey and feed him what he wants and when he wants it, nourishing the soul (mine) as well as the body (his). It would be a pyrrhic victory for me to attempt to starve him into compliance but I am aware that I am breaking the rules, but so what; Variety is the spice of life. |
My cat was like this. For 10 yrs we had this battle. I finally found something that she will eat consistently. But whenever she goes back to her old ways, I just decrease her portions until she starts eating again. They will not let themselves starve. My cat just had me trained....whenever she got bored with her food, she knew I would go out and find something else. I finally stop being a sucker. |
