HELP! new puppy growls at husky I just got a 14 week Yorkie puppy. I have been planning for months and read a ton about the breed. I aleady have a 4 year old siberian husky. I brought the pup home today and the pup seems fine with the husky untill the husky comes near him. He will growl and bite at the husky. The husky loves all dogs and just wants to play but the Yorkie gets mad when she comes to close. Will the Yorkie get used to the husky? I was hoping they would best friends eventually.. is this a possibility? Any tips or advice would be great! |
First of all, congrats on your little one and welcome! Your little one is probably scared of your husky. I mean, your husky probably is 1,000 x bigger than your pup. I once heard something along the lines of "try to see the world through your puppy's eyes." Get down on the floor at his/her level and look around. It is a pretty scary place. I think you pup will do fine eventually and they will probably be best friends. It usually just takes some time. |
Siberian Huskies have a very strong prey drive. You husky may be a friendly dog, but instincts are instincts and you never know when they might kick in. Siberian Husky Breed Profile |

my son has an Alaskan malamute and my yorkies, LOVE him, but they are not allowed in the same floor alone, my son lives in the studio upstairs and the silkies and yorkie live with me in the main floor. the lil ones bark at the malamute when he is in the yard, they play when my son is home, but NEVER alone. the malamute like the husky are very prey oriented dog and the lil ones feel it. Be very careful, please,I know your husky is good but you never know when the lil will do something and they cross the line. congrats on your lil one.. hugs |

Maybe your Yorkie knows this instinctively. |
My sister has a german shepard/husky mix(Sasha) and Lola LOVES her! Sasha will literally lay on her tummy and back and let Lola pounce all over her. But Lola was very intimidated at first, but after a little while (maybe an hour or so) they became best buds. Sahsa had previous experience with little dogs(from my Kiwi) and it took her a while to learn to be easy and gentle with him, but now she is amazing with them! I say give it a little time and I'm sure they will get along just fine! |
When I first brought Lilly home and was having her and RJ meet, she not only growled at RJ, but she bit his nose pretty good. Good enough to make it bleed. It took her months to get used to him being around and now they're good friends. I have no doubt that it's because of his size that she freaked out the way she did. |
Thanks for all the replies guys! It's only been a month and they are already best friends. After a couple of days he had already stopped growling at her and was brave enough to walk on her as long as she was laying down, but when she got up he would run. As each day passed he would get more confident with Sadie and now they ruff house and sleep together like they've know each other their whole lives. I am so thankful they adjusted as well as they did! |
That's great to hear :) congrats on that! |
hi , i was worried about the same thing when i brought Oscar home at 12 weeks. I also have a 3 year old shih tzu & Angus, Airedale Terrier @ 85 pounds. Fortunately Oscar does not growl or bark at Angus. They get along pretty good but i never leave them alone together. I guess my advice would be always, always supervise their interactions. You just never know. My Angus is a very sweet dog but he is much too big to play unsupervised with a yorkie & shih tzu. Just take it slow and give them some time to get to know each other. If it is warm enough where you live maybe you could take them for a walk together. It just takes time and a lot supervision... |
