Spay Advice Needed 1 Attachment(s) Hi all, I am a long-time lurker, first time poster in need of all your sage advice. I have had the most wonderful little Yorkie girl since June. Her name is Kiwi and she is the love of my life. She is 8 months old now and has had no heats yet. I'm told if she is spayed before her first heat that her chances of uterine or mammary cancer are eradicated. My question is, she weighs just 2 lb 10 oz, and how safe is it? I have talked to several veterinarian's offices and none seemed to have a problem with her size. I have a preoperative exam next Tuesday. I'm just so torn about putting her through this and the chance of losing her. She will also need to have retained baby teeth pulled at the same time. Should I wait until she is bigger and risk her having a heat? What are your experiences with this? Has anyone lost their baby to spaying? Thank you very much in advance :). Here is a picture of my little : |
OMG!! Kiwi is ADORABLE!! My own opinion ,.....I would wait till she is a little bigger....JMO I was nervous about having my girls spayed as well...actually I was a total WRECK from the time I dropped them off to the time we picked them up...Sadie was was 4( 6 1/2 lbs) Lillie was 3 yrs (4 1/2 lbs) they did GREAT! Sadie being the older of the two, I thought would have a harder time coming out of the anesthesia...it was Lillie!! My vet uses an anesthesia that is very gentle...they wake up almost immediately when it is removed. Lillie didn't come out quite a quickly as Sadie did...But all in all they did great...Sadie also had a tooth pulled...Only thing I did notice is they both gained a pound...I know how nerve wracking this is for you.. |
Kiwi is gorgeous!!! :aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
Your baby is adorable! I had Rosie spayed at 7 months old and Mikki was spayed at 1 year old. Rosie is 5 1/2 lb now and I really don't remember how much she weighed at that time. Mikki is 3 1/2 lb and did just fine with her spay. I was very nervous when I dropped my girls off too. I think that is part of it. The vet assured me that they would be fine. They have done spays on 1 lb pups. I would be more concerned with the combining of the two but I am really not knowledgeable enough to give advice on that. But I do think she will do just fine with the spay. Hope that helps. |
Oh my How cute is she! I'm a firm believer in 'the older the better' as she may get a little bigger, and the risks of problems with anesthesia decrease. Your vet can determine if her growth plates are closed through an x-ray, and it's best to get pre-op bloodwork on her to detect any liver problems, etc. |
Definitively on the blood work. I don't think it is even an option as far as I am concerned. |
Love your Kiwi, she is just adorable. It is always a scary thing when we have to have these procedures done on our babies, definatley do blood work and i think if she only needed a couple teeth pulled i would not have a problem with that as long as there were no problems with the spay, just not a whole mouth full of teeth pulled, saves having to go under again later. Does not matter how good your vet is it is always a risk but one we have to take to make sure our babies are healthy. Wishing you and your baby good luck! |
Kiwi is just adorable. I had both of my girls spayed with no problems at all. I had blood work done on both of them before the procedure. |
There is risk to getting it done but there is also risk to not getting it done. Many smaller ones get it done everyday without problems. |
My opinion is just to get the pre-op bloodwork and if they say she's good to go and you trust your vet then I would do it. Silver weighed like 3lbs when we had her spayed at 6months and she did wonderful. She was actually up the day after trying to run around so we had to pretty much tie her down so she wouldn't be so active. |
Hi. I know nothing about having your girl spayed, but I just wanted to say how precious your little girl is. Welcome. |
My Daisy was about 3 lbs when she was spayed. I would get your dog spayed now, as your vet suggests, and make sure they do pre-anesthetic blood work, that your dog is monitored during the procedure, and that the vet uses the safest anesthesia. There is a sticky in health and diet forum about the anesthetic drugs. My vet uses isoflurane which is very safe, even in small breeds. |
Your little girl is gorgeous....I am for spaying and neutering... |
I just had Bella(5 lbs) spayed 1 month ago and she did great. She was groggy, her mouth was wet from drooling, and she rested the remainder of the day but the next day she was just about herself and wanted to play. I put a newborn onesie on her upon picking her up so her incision area would be covered. I was nervous as well about doing this but I knew it was best for her and got it over with before she went into heat. Now I can hardly even see the incision line. |
Hello and welcome from the UK!! :wavey:Just wanted to say, Harry thinks your little Kiwi is absolutely gorgeous!!! Good luck with your decision :) Sally + Harry :aimeeyork x |
Welcome to you and your beautiful little Kiwi:) Talk to your vet about your fears for her being spayed and that should help you decide. I was leery when my two got done, but the vet answered all of my questions and concerns, did pre op blood work, and used Isoflourane for the surgery. They both came out very well and were wanting to run and play the next day:eek: There is always risk with any surgery, but I believe that the benefits far outweigh that. Good luck:D |
I don't think we can say this too much but Kiwi is adorable. I talked to 3 vets about a good time to have Sissy spayed (had to travel to 3 different towns to get 3 vets) One said 6 months the other 2 said 5 months so I split the difference and did it at almost 7 moths lol. All 3 said that though it used to be thought that waiting until after 1 heat was best, they now know that there is no need. If your vet is comfortable with Kiwi's weight then she should be fine. As everyone else has said, ask questions and let the vet erasure you. I had a chihuahua that I couldn't get spayed because of a heart murmur, she never had a litter and she passed on at 14 from a mamory tumor. So the alternative to not getting her spayed is very dangerous. My bet is that the worse that will happen from the operation is a few more grey hairs for Mom. :D |
Do the blood work. Pick a vet who is experienced with spaying small dogs. Choose the vet you feel will give your baby the best care. Be sure to ask who will be watching her after recovery-if they want her over night will there be 24 hours care-really why would they not send her home if no one is there to watch her why any vet's still do this is so illogical. Also I highly recommend a Kiss-E Cone from Hotrod's Mom. If her not haivng a heat is prior to spay is critical to you then do it sooner than later she is over 2 #, it's under 2# PEOPLE are most concerned with. |
Thanks to you ALL for your suggestions and advice. I do feel so much better. I'll have the preop bloodwork done and see what more the veterinarian has to say Tuesday. Also, will make sure they are using isoflurane. I'll post more after this exam just in case it helps anyone else out there having to make this tough decision. She is the most wonderful little girl in the world (to me), and having her in my life has just been the biggest blessing. The turds and puddles (we're working on it!), the eye boogers, the "I will eat nothing but freeze-dried not frozen Stella and Chewy's so don't dare run out," and the torn up papers all over just bring me smiles. Oh, and the ankle biting when I walk through the house--how I would miss that! My kids are grown now, and she's my new kid. I spend more money on her clothes, hair doodas, food, and shampoos than I do myself (don't tell my husband!). I guess I'm completely twitterpated, as are all of you poor souls. Thanks again to everyone :) |
