Yorkies living up north Im moving up north to the frozen tundra with my Yorkie. He is already afraid of everything that moves. I'm worried he will be afraid of snow and ice and cold weather and never want to go outside and just pee indoors. Is there some kind of winter clothes I should get or him? |
I got my doggies coats and booties!!! They also make cute hats and stuff !!! :D |
You sure need a warm coat. I don't know about boots. Most dogs don't like them. I do have socks for Gracie to wear indoors and she doesn't mind them unless she is trying to chew her bully stick. Be careful where you walk your dog. Don't let it walk on any area that has been salted because of snow and ice. The salt will cause the snow and ice to stick to his feet and freeze the little guy. It is actually very painful to a dog. The salt is also very harsh on the paws. They sell a pet friendly salt but it is more expensive and most people just buy the regular stuff. You might consider trying to use pee pads for when there is a real nasty storm and wind. |
We have four-legged fleece jogging suits for cold weather. When it's really cold, you can add a coat over them. Snow suits are great, too! Watch his ears. They can get frostbitten easily, as well as the little paws. Some nice soft booties will protect his paws. |
I always let Jackson explore everything for himself. Don't act afraid for him, or nervous, or baby him... just put him out there and bring some tasty treats and let him learn how to enjoy it!! Or at least tolerate it. From a very early age (9 weeks) I encouraged Jackson to try anything... jump up on a log with confidence, swim in the pool, play in the snow. Yes it does depend dog to dog of course but I believe any one can get a Yorkie to enjoy certain things with some effort! :) Good luck!! Oh I do have jackets, etc, for the winter. Most of the time I honestly don't think he needs them. But it makes me feel better with them on, and he looks so darn cute in them! |
Where exactly are you moving? I live 13hrs north of the border in Alberta only 4hrs from the northwest territories... Maci loooooves going outside so far the coldest she has been out this winter is -27celcius. I actually have a really hard time getting her to come in! She doesn't wear a coat or boots unless we go for a walk becausethe cement trail always has ice salt on it &it makes her paws sore. Other than that really winter up here is no worse than winter in Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, etc... I grew up in the Midwest and I prefer my northern Canada winter over a Midwest winter any day... It's nice and dry here no cold to the bone weather. And southern BC didn't even have snow when we were there Dec 23-Jan 2 last year we saw grass the whole time! Mind you I'd pick a place with no winter if I could! My pit bull Diesel however won't stay out any longer than it takes him to do his "business" lol!! |

It's pretty much a frozen tundra in new england LOL. Mine wear sweaters and jackets but for the most part they want nothing to do with the snow. |
Mine dont really go out in the snow. Chachi will go out to go to the bathroom then come right in |
I've ordered Prissy some sweaters since we have been having really cold mornings and evenings...she just does her business and wants back in when it is cold. Now when the weather is decent she loves to be as nosey as possible but now walks for her until all shots are given...I hope the xxsmall will fit her.. |
Yes, a lot depends on your dog's coat type. Gracie has a fine silky coat with no undercoat at all. She gets cold very easily. Some apartments and houses have cold floors in the winter so check for yourself how cold the floors get. These little ones are so close to the floor they tend to feel the cold first. Gracie's feet get really cold and she will want me to hold her so she can warm her feet up. So she now has various indoor wear for when the floors are cold. If your dog has a good thick coat he may not need things like that. Last winter was Gracie's first winter and at first I thought she was being very clingy but she actually just wanted someone to warm her up. When I was not available to do it she would lay on top of one of the cats to get body heat! Many dogs love to play in the snow but if yours tends to be fearful you need to show him that snow is fun. You may need to shovel an area for him to go potty outside because of the depth of the snow. I used to have to do that for my previous dog. |
most of the time Kiva went out with nothing on. it was usually just a quick trip to do her business. once in a while i would be able to slip a coat on her but she had a striped sweater that she absolutely hated....gave me a dirty look every single time i put it on her...lol |
