New to Yorkie Talk. I have a few questions. My baby is going on pee pads in the garage. He is doing really good with that. I have a exercise pen that i have made really little for him to stay in at night and when we leave. I had to fix a top on it because he was getting out of it some how. The trouble is now is that he wants to get up in the middle of the night and go out and do his job. Thats fine I take him out and he does it and i put him back in it and he will go back to sleep. But when I leave him in it to go some where he will make a mess in it sometimes. I am a stay at home mom and lots of days i don't go anywhere so i will leave him out all day. Should i put him in it anyway on the days i am at home all day? Should I get a small crate? Will that be better that the exercise pen ? And would it be better to just leave him in the utility room with a pee pad when we are gone? My daughter plays basketball and we are gone at sometimes about 5 hours or so at a time. He is 4 months old and he really likes my lap.:) |
I think if you're going to be gone long then you should put him in a small crate where he can only stand up and turn around and he shouldn't mess in it. That will teach him to hold it. But you don't want him to have to hold it too long.The pen is probably too big and he pees in one side and plays/sleep in the other. |
Four months is a great age to begin training, but you can expect too much too soon. At first you are training yourself on how long your little guy can hold it. Don't forget they can hold it twice as long during the night as during the day. We kept Joey in a small crate at night by the bed, and I would take him out twice to pee and then place him back in the crate. During the day, you can crate train, but you need to take them out every hour. Many people use an xpen and just place pee pads in it. Joey took to the pee pads right away. When they are out of the crates or pens, your eyes should be glued to them and a pee pad should never be too far away. Ignore the accidents and praise the success. Some people think that punishment works if there's an accident, but it can teach them to hide their urine and poop, and also promote submissive peeing in the future. The times they give for how long a certain age dog should be able to hold it, is not really suitable for a yorkie, they don't mature as fast, so decrease the times by half. |
Thanks, I am going to buy a small crate. I think i need to try it. Will he be ok in it from about 5 till 9 at night. Will that make him not wont to go back in it for bedtime? |

Just wanted to shout a big welcome to you! AND I know exactly where Town Creek is! I live in PA now, but I was born and raised in Russellville, AL. I wish we could move back, but hubby can't be transferred just yet. We are coming home for Christmas though. And Congrats on your Yorkie! I am a newer Yorkie Mom myself and a stay at home wife. Our Katie Scarlett hasn't been alone yet. We take her everywhere we go and if we are gone too long, we take her to doggy daycare. As you may can tell, we do not have any skin kids. LOL. She's like a child to us. :) |
