I am so old. I remember when you used to get meals, honey-coated peanuts, carry bag w airline emblem on it, etc. The planes used to be incredibly clean. Of course, I swear there was more leg room in coach back then too. |

OMY! Sad to say but the cargo shipping of pets nationwide averages $250, but taking your dog on your lap costs about the same! I looked at it last night-the $40 is a check fee only a few airlines are offering as a promotional deal to certain locations only on certain flights. Did you also read they can charge you an extra $25 fee at the gate depending on the number of carry ons per the flight!? Ridiculous! |
I agree about calling the airlines. Tis the season so maybe you can find someone who cares. Depending on who the airlines is will make a difference. I like Southwest. Wish they flew through here. My wife needed to get to Chicago last year and prices were out of this world. I got a very nice person on the phone, told them my story and believe it or not, she mailed me a free "jump seat ticket" of hers. I guess it was a stand by ticket or something. In any event, I'm not saying they'll give you a free ticket, but maybe they'll help you somehow. Also, if you get someone who isn't helpful, call again and again until you find someone who may be able to help. good luck. |
I agree with all of you its just not right and I don't know how they justify charging the amount they do because my babies travel bag is a carry on and he only takes up the alotted space I am entitled to upon purchasing ticket in the first place. I am real good at calling corporate offices of companies and voicing a complaint so I thing I shall call Spirit HQ and pose this question to them, why is the cost so high and ask them to explain the charge to me. It certainly cannot hurt a thing. Cynthia & Gizzy |
Hi Everyone, just wanted to up-date you on my progress here, I have made the carrier bag issue go away, the lady at my local cleaners told me to bring her the bag that has the rip in it and she will fix it at no charge, because the tear is not that bad and will not require a great deal of work. Also, my local thrift store had a Bergan comfort carrier that came in today, they have it marked for $10.00 but she told me she would hold it for me because everything will be half proce this weekend and I can get it for $5.00. Is that not awesome or what....woo hoo...progress.....what a great feeling...lol Thanks for listening gang, I appreciate all of you so very much Cynthia & Gizzy!@ |
Great!:) |
So I went digging into some of my plastic storage containers and discovered that I have quite a few purses and what not that I can post on craigslist and ebay...woo hoo. I use to sell designer knock off purses a few years ago and forgot I even any left. Wish me luck ladies.:D |
Just a thought.. If everyone could carry a pet on a plane free of charge, the plane would sound -really- annoying. I've been on flights before where other peoples' dogs cried the entire flight. I bring Tashi with me everywhere I go , but I just accept that it's $75 each way, and I only fly southwest with her now. I've tried other airlines, but they were unkind about me having a dog and I didn't like that. |

In my view its not about allowing the pet to travel free but here's the thing, I just do not think it is right to charge such a high price for my pet because after all, when purchasing a ticket that entitles me to to a carry on bag that should fit underneath the seat in front of me. So if my puppy is in a bag that can be carried on-board and fits underneath the seat in front of me, why am I paying an additional $200.00 as if I am occupying more space than the next passenger. I just do not think it is a fair price at all. I feel like if I am paying that much more money my pet should in fact have his own seat, in reality my own air fare was only $90.00 more than they want to charge for my pet. Its not right |

I am saying that if they had no limit for # of dogs and did allow dogs to fly free as carry-on it would get very annoying for passengers, especially ones that did not have dogs. I have been on a flight before where someones dog howled and barked the whole time and it was rather bothersome. Then again, they let children on flights, and they can be pretty loud too :p |

I do agree that the dog should not be in place of a carry-on, I pay 200 dollars to take my dog with my, no complaints- but I shouldn't also have to then pay to check my luggage. I think since there is a small limit for pets and a huge fee, it should in no way affect your luggage restrictions as well. |
I don't like this at all its just not fair to me however, its totally important to me to do all that I can to make this happen, if I am unable to pay for the trip for my Gizmo, I will not be going home for the holidays. As much as I want to see my family, I consider Gizmo my child and will not leave him behind. He is my responsibility, and I know that if we were seperated for those 2 weeks...geez it has never happened in the five years we have been together. And I know my Gizmo would be upset and depressed etc. I know all of you know our babies have feelings just like we do and some people that are not animal lovers don't understand this. So I am forgimg ahead to make it happen some how some way. Cynthia & Gizmo |
i hear ya on the needs money. we're having our first child and i'm not going back to work. plus two dogs and a big mortgage to pay. it's hard on everyone right now esp when you just can't seem to get hired. i don't have much advice, but wanted to say a quick prayer over your situation and that things will all look up for you soon. |

Sell something on Ebay? I bet if you looked around you could find plenty of things in your home that you don't need...and someone might be looking for them! :) Good luck! |
Southwest is the cheapest as far as flying with pets, only $75 each way...if you sister is going to pay for the ticket, maybe she could just give you gas money instead? It may be cheaper depending on how far you are going? |
Wow!! I have read through the posts and there are some great ideas. The eBay thing sounds promising and the puppy sitting idea might work if you have the space. Since you have been on this site for awhile you might be able to offer help training people's pups, cheaper than a professional would. Since most people are feeling the financial crunch, affordable training would be nice. Perhaps even incorporate the training with the sitting lol. If it works out, you may not have to look for another job. Another thought is that since you live in Texas you might offer cheap English classes to help some Hispanic people who want to learn but can't afford schools. You don't need to speak Spanish, but you'll pick up a few Spanish words as you go. Lol. you can check at and put notices up at places where spanish speaking people frequent. At any rate it sounds like you are pulling it all together. I can feel your determination through the iPhone. Keep us posted please. |
You guys are just awesome, I really love the support and the multitude of ideas, just what I needed and why I posted. And yes I am bound and determined...lol...as for my sister she already purchased the ticket...you know how it is when you find a cheap flight...you have to get it right away before they go up, it was $290.00 to Michigan, which is why it upsets me so that its only $90.00 more than what they want to teavel with my pet. Just wrong I tell you...never the less gonna pay every penny of it if I get it...lol. ynthia & Gizmo |
Hi, good luck getting your Yorkie to Michigan. If you are interested I have a softside carrier I would more than happy to give you (I have a couple of them). Please PM me if you want it and I can send it to you. I was going to suggest EBay, I bet you will make the money in no time. |
Would it be cheaper to buy the pup a people seat, then you would be allowed 2 carry-ons, 1 for you and 1 for him! |
