I hope I haven't made a mistake I made an appointment for Scooter to have his teeth cleaned and to be neutered. He wasn't neutered when we rescued him and the vet says he has both testicles undescended and that can be a sure cause of testicular cancer. She gave me a long list of the precautions she takes when doing any surgical procedure and she said Scooter is very fit and should do well. I'm still so afraid that something will go wrong. I've not had a very good time of it lately, my husband died two weeks ago and if anything were to happen to Scooter I don't know what I would do. Guess I'm still in shock. I trust this vet as she was recommended by my vet but............. |
Bless your heart! I am so very sorry for the loss of your husband. I am newer to all this Yorkie stuff and still learning, so I cannot offer as good of advice as these older pro's. But, I did want to say that I hope everything goes well. I will keep you guys in my prayers! |
Just make sure to get his bloodwork done beforehand. How old is he, and why was he not neutered before you rescued him? Did you rescue him through an actual rescue, or did you adopt him from a private party? Neutering is not as invasive as a spay, and your guy will be back to normal within a day or so. |
It should go well just make sure you get blood work done first. |
I'm so sorry about the passing of your husband. No wonder you are extra worried. I'm sure he will be okay...you are doing the best thing for him. My Peyton had one undescended testicle. He was a little sore after surgery, but other than that he was a-ok! Hugs to you! |
I know exactly how you feel. My wife died two years ago and I do not know what I would have done without my two furbabies. I had both of mine neutered and you could not even tell they had anything done. God bless and believe it or not, it does get better. |
I'm so sorry for your loss, and I agree with Bitsy. It's no wonder you are super sensitive about the neuter. As I understand it, it takes a very short time for them to be under and that alone reduces the risk. If his blood work is normal, he should be OK. I've always had my boys neutered and a few of them didn't even act sore. Good luck and God bless. |
I am so sorry to hear about your husband. You guys are in my thoughts! I know you cant help but to worry. But try to think positive. I am sure things will go well. Trusting your vet is key. So Im sure they will make sure he is healthy before even doing the procedure. |
I understand your nervousness. We all feel that way. Blood tests are a must before any procedure like that. I have Kacee's blood checked once a year before her teeth cleaning anyway. I'm sorry for the loss of your husband. |
Thank you everyone for your kind words. The vet is very careful. She does a pre-anesthetic profile which will tell if he has a clotting abnormality that could cause a problem during surgery. Also if he has any unknown problems with his heart, liver or kidneys. He will be under an EKG/anesthetic monitoring and receive post op pain med. He will stay all night so he can be closely watched. I do think the vet is very good and I do trust her, it's just that Scooter means the world to me and I can't help worry. Thanks for your positive encouragement. I feel better about it. Now all I have to do is tell Scooter he can't run and jump like a little flea for several days. He won't like that.:animal37 |
Oh I forgot to say that Scooter is probably 5 and who knows why the stupid people who had him would not neuter him. He also had never had any vaccinations. None. We heard about him through a friend that some woman had a Yorkie and her children were mistreating him so I went over there and said I'd buy him. She said ok because otherwise she was going to "get rid of him". Nice. Right after he came to live with us my husband got sick and I just never got around to the neutering although I made sure he had all his inoculations. |

I am so sorry about your husband. But if it's any help, we just adopted our two Yorkies on the 10th, and had them neutered/dentals on the 18th. They each had some teeth removed, but did absolutely fine and they are a bit older, 4.5 years. The next day they were back to their old selves, playing, eating, and being a rambunctious duo. |

I am very sorry for the loss of your husband. I have been there myself. Just go one day at a time. Put off major changes for a year, like selling your house and so on. I will pray for rest and comfort, I know you need them. I don't have any different advice about your Scooter. Everyone agrees with pretesting before surgery. |
I am so sorry for your loss. My thoughts and prayers are with you. As far as Scooter goes, it sounds like your vet is wonderful and will take all necessary precautions. Its good that you are planning to have him neutered and teeth cleaning at the same time. If he does not have a microchip and you are considering that, you may to have that done at the same time too. I know I have to get Jack to get his teeth cleaned and I keep putting it off because I worry about him going under too, but I need to get him in and while he is getting his teethers cleaned we are going to have him chipped too. Take care and good luck to you and Mr. Scooter! |
I'm very sorry for the loss of your husband and hope you begin healing soon. The only advice I can further offer on the neuter is that you should check to see if there is someone at the vet's 24 hours, at my vets there wasn't so as soon as my dogs were altered I promptly brought them home despite my vet grumbling about it-I said unless you are going to be watching my dog around the clock checking every 15 minutes in the least which I doubt you will then my baby will be coming home. I did that with both my adopted rescue picking him up 5 hours after he was fixed (first time meeting him in person) and with my female 2 hours after she came out of surgery. Also I insisted my male had liquid band-aid put over his incision to keep any bacteria out he had dissolving stitches put in. The vet who did my females spay refuses dissolving stitches saying they can leave too much scar tissue and itch dogs more therefore she refuses use of them and also she knows people will bring their dogs back in to get them out and she can ensure there is no infection. HotRodsMom makes Kiss-E cones a soft collar cone that is a miracle for dog's recovering from such issues. I don't know how I survived without the Kiss E cone before. |
So sorry to hear of the loss of your husband. I don't have any advice add as there are many who have shared some very good advice. My thoughts and prayers are with you. I think it is wonderful that you have a place like YT to come where people are so willing to help and support you any way they can. |
Scooter is a lucky little yorkie to have had you save him from a terrible life. It sounds like you have a great vet. I really do understand how you feel. I always make an attempt to go shopping to keep myself busy the day that Kacee gets her teeth cleaned, but I'm always so nervous that I cannot enjoy it. It is just a way to keep myself busy. I always bring her home the same day and I am usually bringing home a very sleepy yorkie. I remember when she was spayed that she was trying to jump in a couple of days. I really had to watch her closely and keep her gated away from things. Even though she has stairs to the beds, she always had a habit of going down a couple of stairs and then jumping from there! |
Thanks everyone. I will let you know how Scooter fares during his surgery. You all are so kind. |
Very sorry to hear about your loss. I am sending well wishes and praying for your little Scooter. |
Happy Holiday !!!!! Sorry to hear about your husband, it's so hard when we lose a love one. He should be fine, if all the blood work came back ok !!! Happy holiday !!!! manina, miley, max, reirei, rudy |
I'm so sorry about the loss of your husband and can definitely see how you might be scared right now about Scooter's surgery. Just a thought, but if the teeth cleaning can wait a bit, perhaps that might be better just so you aren't putting yourself through any extra stress right now. Even a couple of weeks might help you feel a little more confident things as well as giving you a little time to take care of yourself. |
