Spaying and small dogs I want to get my baby Chloe spayed, probably after chistmas, so she'll be around 9 months old then. My concern is that she's very small, maybe 3lbs if that, so could she have more problems during the operations? Or with all the drugs that they will be giving her? Also, my vet wants $700 for the whole operations, is that a normal price? |
Good question! I would like some input on this as well. KS will be having her spay after Christmas too. I've talked to our vet about it, but haven't asked on the price yet. We are going to have the microchip done then as well. I go back in a week for her last Lyme Shot. I will ask the price then and share what I find out. I am curious as to what others can tell us about this. KS will be around 4 pounds or so I think. I'm already dreading the day, but it has to be done. |

I may of worded that wrong...it's the vaccine for the lyme disease. To protect her from lyme disease I should say. It's not very common in our area right now but we will be traveling to Alabama to see our families a lot and it's very common down there so our vet recommended it. I don't know the exact name of the vaccine. I can look it up in her folder. |
My mom had her 4 year old spayed and she was only 2 1/2 pounds. She made very sure that she had a vet that specialized in very small dogs. I had my Abbi spayed when she was 8 months old and she was only 2 pounds. Again I used the same vet that worked a lot with very small animals. Both operations when well. I don't think the size of the dog is too much of a problem. It's the vet's experience in performing surgery with small animals that is very important. |
Have bloodwork done beforehand. Also anesthetic should be ISO. |
I had Sofia spayed at 2lbs5 oz and 8 months and she did great. Alexis was only 1lb10oz and 8 months, again no problems. You need to talk to your vet, make sure they are comfortable doing surgery on little ones. Alexis even had 12 teeth pulled at the same time, because he said she handled it beautifully. My vet has a lot of experience with tiny ones and has been very supportive and only does what is safe. Make sure all the blood work is done before surgery, and if all is well your baby should do well. Don't be afraid to ask your vet any questions, there there to help you. Good luck. |

willow is 1kg and I was extremely nervous about the whole thing so I made sure the vet I trust did the op and went in and spoke to him beforehand plus he said they used baby anasesthetic on the small ones...all went well thank heavens |
