Grain allergy For about the last year I have been feeding Callie grain free food not because she has a known allergy but just because she has had skin allergy problems for two years and it seemed to have been environmental not due to food allergies and I would give her an allergy pill during spring, summer and early fall. Well this year even though she was getting an allergy pill once a day (the dose is one pill every 12 hours) she had no break outs and an occasional bump or two but not like the year before. Because it didnt seem she had a grain allergy when I asked my dad to pick up some caned food for me after Callie's surgery to get her to eat and get more water into her system, I just said get any wellness and that chicken, turkey and fish are her favorite of anything. The caned food was not grain free and for the last four days that as well as her regular hard food has been what I am feeding her. Now she is scratching her little face some (not crazy) and she has two small non read bumps on her head. Is it possible she could have a small grain allergy or developed one? I hope that was understandable :) |
It could be she has developed a sensitivity to grain. Her body is not used to it. Grain is not a natural food for a dog to eat. It is used as a filler and because it increases the shelf life. Apparently with the reaction she is having she is better off without it. My little one just refused to eat any food with grain in it and since then I have read a lot about the dog food industry. I think she had better sense than I did. |
My Lucks has a grain allergy, specifically to corn. I keep him on the LID food from Natural Balance. I would stick with feeding her grain-free food. If that is what she was doing well on and wasn't getting itchy on, why switch!? |

I hope her itchies go away fast! |
I feed Taste of the Wild here, the wetlands roasted foul. Scoobers is allergic to corn and I was using Innova but I notice Princess wasn't doing well on a brown rice base, and it was getting too hard to feed at that time 4 dogs 4 different foods. It's ice with TOTW I can feed it to any stage, age dog and it's low on allergens. The roasted fouls is a 5 star rated food comparable to specialty brands not widely available and brands that are quadruple the price. Unfortunately dogs can develop allergies just like people and further the reaction to an allergy can become more severe over time. You may at some point need to consider a RAW diet. |

The protein in a grain could be an allergen, but they wouldn't simply just be allergic to grains. There could be one in particular or it could be the food as a whole and how the ingredients are interacting that doesn't agree with her (or something totally different - new environmental allergen, fleas from the vet hospital, etc.). I would not stop feeding grain because one food with grain in it made my pup itchy. And also there are sometimes other meats/poultry/soy besides the first one listed. What else is in the food besides chicken or turkey... |

Gracie eats Stella & Chewy's. It' a great food. Better quality than the meat I eat. |

Mine spent 2 years eating virtually EVERYTHING, he was on grain free food too. All of a sudden we notice he developed allergies to: rice, oatmeal, corn, chicken and possibly salmon, and beef. It can happen all of a sudden and can be anything. You said there were multiple protein flavors that you considered, I would also check the proteins in the grain free food you give normally versus the protiens in the canned food. It is possible that it could be the protein too. |
