Hawk scare today! I took the pups for a walk this morning and when we got home we were relaxing in the back yard. Suddenly two hawks appeared out of nowhere making loud squawks and circled and swooped down. Luckily I was standing on the deck holding Daisy and I opened the door and put her in and made a dash for Teddy. Normally he would run if he was me running towards him like a mad person but he must have known something was wrong because of the racket the birds were making. I picked him up and ran for the house. As I held him on the deck I watched them circling lower and lower. As soon as I put him in the house they left. I have never been so scared. Daisy and Teddy weigh 16 pounds each but the hawks wanted them anyway. I have no doubt that Teddy Bear was their target. I have a lot to be thankful for today. I just want to put out a reminder not to leave your little ones unattended in the yard and watch for hawks. If they hadn't been making such a loud fuss, I would not have seen them coming. I have never seen a hawk around here before this summer. When I did see them earlier in the summer they were circling pretty high up. They are getting pretty bold (or hungry). |
So glad you were there to protect them. We never used to see them here, but in recent years they've become an almost daily threat. I know how scared they can make you. |
omg thankful for the reminder. mines only 3lbs. glad it turned out ok!!!! |
I hope people with fenced yards will realize that their pets are not as safe as it may seem. |
That is horrible. I'm so glad you all are safe. |
How scary! I'm glad you were out there to protect them... |
Oh my! That is scary! So glad you all are safe! I have to watch around here too. We have so many big birds and they scare me! |
Jean, I am so glad you stay out with your pups. I stay out with mine as well. Even though we are out with our little ones it only takes a minute to have something terrible happen. Thanks for being such a great Mom to your little ones. |
Thank goodness everyone is ok! Those birds of prey are dangerous as heck. Even if they don't "get away" with an animal, there's the danger of injury from talons or being dropped from great height:( We had some kind of huge bird a couple of years ago that was stalking my two for a few days/week or so. Every time I looked out the window (before taking them out into the yard), I'd see that darned thing sitting on the utility pole above my yard:mad: Good thing mine are pee pad trained, because they didn't get to go outside if I saw or heard that bird. SCARY:eek:!!!!! The bird finally moved on, we haven't seen one since, but I still look and listen to make sure before we go outside. |
I saw a show on tv about birds. When I saw the size of some of their talons, I realized that they can do a lot of damage even if they can't carry the pup off. I feel so uncomfortable now. |

oh my, i'm so happy your little ones are safe! before i got my puppy, i kept reading in books to be careful cause hawks can carry yorkies away and i almost didn't believe it but looks like it happens. A trainer at petsmart told me that a client of hers had a yorkie that she would let out on a porch that was all screened in on the sides and top and the hawk was still able to get in and take the puppy. I literally almost cried at petsmart. It made me so upset to hear these stories. |
Thank goodness everyone is okay and you were able to get them inside, that would have been so scary. There is a "family" of hawks that live around my house, so Sophie never goes out alone or off of a leash. One time we were at my mom's house and a hawk kept coming to their yard and sitting the fence staring in the window...we think it knew Sophie was around there because it kept coming back until my dad decided to let their lab outside and it flew away and we have never seen it again, she still never goes outside without a person and their lab when she is there. |
Not too long ago, Kristin (Maximo) said she saw her neighbor's yorkie bandanged. She asked them what happened and they told her a hawk tried to carry it away. The yorkie weighed around ten pounds, I believe. |
I can't believe it, but we just went out again and a hawk was sitting on that same pole. I just picked my girl up and walked down there to scare it away. This is an acre lot. We are on the front part of the acre where her fenced yard is located. That pole is at the end of the acre on the other end of the lot. I wish they'd go away.:( |
