How much should a yorkie cost?
 

So I've been reading around in these threads, and noticed something that appears here and there but never really addressed. So here goes... How much (do you think) should a yorkie pup cost from a reputable breeder, without championship bloodline. How much should they cost with a championship bloodline? I just want to know what you guys think is a reasonable price. I mean if I fall in love with a certain pup I'm willing to pay almost anything, but how much is too much??

I understand that some people may find this question rude, but its just another topic so please don't get offended by an innocent question. :)

$1,000 for standard, you can pay a lot more from Champion Lines, that is, if you can get one. The buying the pup is the cheap part. Forget Pet Stores and Mills. Buy the breeder first, then the pup.

Your question is a little confusing, because reputable breeders usually only breed dogs who have obtained a championship, and they are hoping to breed the perfect yorkie, those that aren't deemed as "perfect" are sold to pet owners, who deem them perfect!

I can't tell you for sure what a good breeder would charge, but I can tell you that when I was looking I ran across a lot of BYB's asking between 900 and 1400 for their dogs. No Ch, no testing, no health guarantees and dogs not even close to being in standard. Maybe my idea of "reasonable" is off here, but when I was searching I was willing to spend between 1500 and 2000+ for a well bred dog (pet quality) from a reputable breeder for a dog. (waiting for the reputable breeders to tell me I couldn't even get past their email for that price...)

Don't let price be your only guide, though. Research, research, research. Check out the breeder from every angle.

I actually got the idea to ask this question from you.. I saw you mention it in the breeder forum. On that Edgewood thread. & actually I think YOUR reasonable is VERY reasonable... if that even makes sense lol.
Also I'd like to say that I'm not looking for a new baby (the two that I have are MORE than enough :)). I was just wandering what everyone thought regarding this subject.

I would believe for sure you should be able to get a great healthy pup for that price from a reputable breeder.

I do understand why some people don't want to talk about money, but I really do believe we are doing a disservice to the breed when we don't. Yes, some people think it's crass or they don't want others to know and comment on what they spent. But where would we be in other areas of life if we didn't talk about the real price of things? For instance, I can research what a new Lexus costs and not be shocked when I walk in to the dealer. At the same time, I can also be very wary and know to think twice when the guy down the block offers to sell me a brand spanking new one for $500.

I think it all depends on where you're from and what comes with the pup. Everyone told me I was nutts to pay $1600, but my breeder gave me sooo much more with the pup (toys, beds, grooming supplies, insurance, microchip, her support, a grooming lesson, 2 year guarantee, and a guarantee that if I was having an emergency she is always there to help). I also called a not so reputable breeder and she wanted $1400 for boys and $1500 for girls (really thought it was sketchy that there was different prices for both).

But lets remember I'm a horse person, I've paid a lot of money for quality show horses in my past riding career, so when I was looking for a competitive agility companion for the small dog category, I really didn't care how much he costs.

:thumbup::thumbup: Exactly! I knew what you were getting at when I read that other thread, and thought, Hey that would be a good/helpful topic to discuss so I thought I would just make a thread about it.

Having paid from 1,000.00 to 2500.00 (champion sired) from a reputable show breeder to 1500.00 from a BYB. The one form the BYB ended up having nearly 8,000.00 in vet bills the first 6 months I had her with no health guarantee. I learned the hard way to really research your breeder and when you find a great one the price is secondary.

I agree with you totally on this! I don't think it should be considered crass or wrong to talk about the money aspect of buying a yorkie. This is after all...yorkietalk, a place to find out ALL things yorkie! I don't think anyone thinks your rude or silly for asking OP! It's good to have an idea and as much advice about prices and WHY in case you ever want to get another YT. Like some have said, you r really buying the breeder first! I would even go so far as to say that to me a wonderful breeder would have many aspects one poster wrote as to WHY and WHAT she recieved for her money, plus require the buyer to have their pet spayed/neutered, and written in contract. This helps keep the breeds pure and with the best traits, culling down on people breeding who don't really know how to do it, and some just wanting to make a fast buck! Good breeders are people who care and are involved even AFTER the purchase, they LOVE the breeds they have. I would be looking for that first, and then worry about cost., but it never hurts to know what ball park figure you'll need BEFORE the actual search. One thing I've learned in life is YOU GET WHAT YOU PAY FOR.LOL It's the same here, but IMHO, it's the breeder and not the pup your really buying.;)
