Getting 2nd Yorkie I am sure this question has been addressed quite a bit but i looked back several pages and didnt see my particular question. We have a 2yr old very laid back 5lb girl and I wanted to add a sister. The girl has 2 girls to choose from they are 13wks old One is 2.5lbs and a little shy she said and the other 3lbs and a ball of energy so says the girl selling them.I think the smaller more shy dogs sounds like a better fit for my girl but is it a mistake to get 2nd dog the same sex. Please let me know youre experiences. I was going to pick up the baby tomorrow and would love feedback. |
Any chance you could take your little girl to meet the two potential prospects? I truly don't believe that the gender matters as much as the personality mix. You don't want two dominant dogs fighting each other, but you also don't want one that picks on the other. |
I have two girls. One is 4 years old the other is 1 year old. You can make it work! :) We did have quite a few fights until they figured out that Rosie is the dominant one. Now it is just an occasional scuffle. All in all I enjoy having my two females. There are times when they are so sweet with each other. And I love watching them play together. |
She lives about 3 hrs from me but is meeting me halfway at a mcdonalds.I really wanted to see the girls down playing but dont know if that will be possible.I heard good things of the breeder that she will be honest with me about the dogs.Mine is spayed if that makes difference.Should i bring my dog along i didnt know if that would be a good idea. |
Hmmm...personally, I wouldn't want to pick up a dog in a McDonald's parking lot. I would want to see where and how that dog was raised. You also might not get a good idea of the true personality of the dog after a 1.5 hour car trip...that's pretty stressful for a little pup. |
Does the breeder do health testing? Have you seen where the puppies live? Have you seen the parents? Is there any kind of health guarantee? |

Ziva is a high energy, busy 2 1/2 yo. I choose Abby from a litter of 4 girls. Certainly not for her looks but for her personality, laid back and sweet, playful but easy to give in. It is working out great- Ziva has become more patient and "mother-ing" to all. |
I'm definitely getting a brother from Teegy, my breeder is highly reputable, does all the health testing and has a five year health guarantee. I've been to her place for social calls and hang out with her dogs. Try to get to know your breeder and a good breeder will have no trouble disclosing anything you need to know |
Getting a 2nd Yorkie I would not feel comfortable getting a pup from a McDonald's parking lot. I think its important to see where the pup lives and how she acts in her surroundings. Don't you think the long ride is worth it? I have 2 female yorkies 4 yrs of age, yes sometimes they fight but most of the times they are great together, as soon as one figures out who is the dominate one every thing is fine after that...:aimeeyork Kathleen |
I have two females. I just recently got the 2nd (past month and a half). They are a year apart in age and came from the same breeder. We have not had any fighting. They do get along, although they can get jealous of attention at times. I would make the 3 hour drive to the breeder's home to visit w the two pups before I made my decision. This is someone who is going to be part of the family for hopefully 15 years, so I would want to visit and make sure this is a good fit. |
Driving to Mickyd's would be a red flag to me. Just tell her it's not an issue to come and meet her onsite as you'd like to see the environment the pup grew up and meet the parents and other pups. Does this person breed more than one breed of dog. If she doesn't agree to that, NEXT... |
