So proud! :DI was so happy today! I was washing the cars and decided to take Bailey out with me, NO Leash. And she didn't run away for the 2 hours we were out there! She would usually run down the street if we opened the door and she got out, but she was sooo good. I was extatic. She stayed there, tanned, and just walked around the front yard. There were many distractions(or as many you can have on a quiet court) and she didn't leave. I can trust her now! I thought I would share my baby's great accomplishment:aimeeyork |
Its nice when you have that momment where you realize they would rather stay with you than cause mischief.... We have a huge field where we meet to practice agility, and it's completely enclosed with trees, so we let them off leash... it's a great feeling |
Please be very careful. You might want to keep her on a leash when she is in the front yard. Even though you're proud of her and she stayed in your yard for 2 hours doesn't guarantee that she might not take off after another dog, cat or person someday, and get hit by a car, or another dog could attack her. It only takes a minute for a baby to get hurt or killed. |
I was watching her like a hwak! There was no way my baby was going to get taken from me:). I think next time we go out, I will just put a regular old leash on her and if she runs I can catch her/step on the leash. But I was proud of her that she didn't leave me or the yard! |

I am too up tight, even if I trust my dog 100 % I still keep a 20 foot training lead on them in an unfenced area. I am fearful of other off leash dogs, stray cats, hawks, eagles, snakes, fire ants, poison toads, crazy people, coyotes, bob cats, aligators, foxes, panthers and dog nappers ! Whew, think I forgot some, but you see my point right ? |
I would be very careful doing that not just because dogs can get distracted and take off after anything but because there are bad people who could snatch her up as well as another animals. All it would take is a second for a bigger dog to come up and attack her. |
Yeah I'm too paranoid. Whenever I am out front washing the car in my driveway, I always put Brandi on an very long leash. Most of the time she just lounges on the grass but you never know when she gets the urge to take off running usually to bark at other dogs who are walking by with their owners. |
That's great that she so obediently stayed with you, but like the other posters I must agree that it's best never to let her off leash in the front. If you're washing your car your attention isn't undivided. I know you said you watched her and I know nothing happened and that's great but I would hate to hear about something happening. Def. get one of those really long training leashes and leave the off leash for a fenced in area. |
I understand. I will do that next time. We live on a quiet court where nobody usually comes by... but there is also an outdoor cat next door and good thing that it wasn't out, or Bailey would have dashed. I will get one of those long leads because we do have neighbors(even though she didn't dash when they were outside) but you never know. I liked that she didn't leave me:) |
