Is this normal or do I need to call vet?

Hey guys! I have a question.

Let me back up a little and give history. Yesterday we took Katie Scarlett to doggie day care. This was her 2nd visit at doggie day care. She did fabulous the first visit and even made many friends. Since she is shy around dogs, we thought we would let her go to day care at least once per week just to help her socialize since there are no dogs in our neighborhood when we go on daily walks or any more dogs in our home. The place we take her came very highly recommended and the staff is just wonderful. They are all so friendly and provide a personal experience. Everyone just loves Katie Scarlett and knew her by name the minute we walked in the door for our 2nd session. They all call her 'the cute one.' LOL. So, we took her for her 2nd visit yesterday so we could go to the nearby IKEA store to shop since they do not let dogs in at IKEA. Well, on the way home we got caught in a major traffic jam. The doggie day care closes at 6 and I am afraid we did not make it back in time to pick her up. So we boarded her overnight. I was a bit worried at first, but they reassured me that she would be fine. She had plenty of food, her purified water, her own toys, and her blankie that she sleeps with. They have someone who stays on staff 24 hours a day, so I knew she would not be alone. There were a few other dogs who were staying overnight as well. So I think it was harder on me than on her. They even made sure she had her nightly grooming and teeth brushing, so I was very impressed.

When I went to pick her up this morning, she was having a ball. She made BFF's with a huge German Shepard puppy. They were so sweet together and looked liked old pals. The staff said she was doing a lot better socializing with the other dogs and that made me so happy! I knew all my worrying was for nothing. Although I do not plan to board her overnight often if at all, I know emergencies come up and now I feel better knowing that she has a safe place she can go and that she likes.

So after picking her up, we went to PetSmart to get some bows for the photo shoot tomorrow. I tried to get her to potty before we went in and she would not. So we went and walked around/socialized a while. Then we came home. I got her settled in and she took a long nap immediately, still no pottying. I figured she was just tired from the change of schedule and let her sleep. She woke up just for a few minutes a while ago and we did a training session with treats. She wasn't as enthusiastic as usual, but she did good. She then ate a bit of puppy food and drank some water. She walked around the room for a minute and I thought she would go potty but she didn't. Now she is laying down and sleeping again. She normally does not sleep nowhere near this much during the day. She always is up and playing. And I'm worried that she hasn't pottied. She's had lots of water and food, but no potty. She hasn't even attemped to go, no squatting, no straining, nothing.

Should I just let her sleep or should I maybe try to get her to go? When should I be worried? Is it normal for them not to potty for a while? She usually goes a lot more often than this. She is a little over 4 months.

Thanks for any help you can give!

She must be EXHAUSTED after all that fun with her new friends! :D:D

I know my dogs are pooped after an hour visit to the dog park and sleep the rest of the day so I can only imagine what a longer visit might look like. My guess is she is a tired girl. :-)

Maybe see if she is back to her normal, perky, self tomorrow. :animal-pa

Sounds like she had a great time at her slumber party and is pooped out! My pup is almost 6 months and still sleeps a ton during the day - even when not having extra activities going on. Katie Scarlett is beautiful- just precious! She will probably perk up when you want to go to bed - lol.

:D Isn't that always the case? lol

I agree with the others, she is probably wiped out from the all the playing.....it's like taking a lil kid to an amusement park!

I would watch her.. if she does not go in another day, may be 2, I would contact the vet..I would be more worried if it was diarrhea.

Only other think that came to mind is if she ate something at the day care that she should not have..

Thanks for your input guys!

Well she is laying down snoring right now. This is only the 2nd time I've ever heard her snore. I will continue to keep a really close eye on her. I'll keep you guys updated. I am hoping it's just that she is exhausted from the sleepover, but will watch her.

Just wondering if you are saying she hasn't pee peed or are you saying she just hasn't gone poo? In which case, i would be less concerned . To me, if she wasn't peeing for that long, and after being in the daycare, I would be taking her to a vet today, because they are most likely open on saturdays, then you wouldn't have to make an e-visit on a sunday if it was something serious. You really have to follow your gut and if she isn't her normal self and you feel unsure, its better safe than sorry, i don't know that i would just attribute it to playing too much, especiallhy since she is only 4 months, not peeing for that long does not sound normal to me.

Hope she feels bet ter soon!

southernbelle04 11-19-2011 10:37 AM

She hasn't pee'd or pooped. She is still sleeping. I think I am going to call the vet now and ask them if I should bring her in. I just would rather be safe than sorry. I'll update you guys. Thanks for your help!!!

Its possible that she is just tired. When Harley was a puppy he would actually go the entire 8 hours at night in his crate, no bathroom, and when we travel he goes an insane amount of time not peeing.

I wouldn't be concerned about poo, they can go a few days without pooing cause they absorb so much more nutrients when they exercise and play. Like someone above said I'd be more concern if there was a huge amount of soft poo.

Keep an eye on her, let her sleep and recoup her energy, chances are when she does go it'll be a big on :P
If you are still concerned, then follow your gut and take her to the vet.

southernbelle04 11-19-2011 11:03 AM

Yay! We have pee!!!! And a big pee at that! She woke up to pee and is now playing a little, but looking like she is getting settled in for another nap. I am going to let her rest.

I did talk to the vet and get his advice as well.

So here's to hoping she will pee again today and possibly poopie. She usually poopies every day. I'll keep updated! Thank you all so much!

That is good to hear she had a big pee! :) gGlad you talked to the vet too, let us know when to celebrate her poo poo!!

Hooray for the pee pee!! Tell Katie Scarlett that we are waiting to hear some more good news. Hope all is well.

Oh, I was worried too - Katie Scarlett not peeing. SO glad to hear she finally did. Going for 8 hours or more w/o peeing I would be very concerned & going to a vet but glad that is not a concern now. :) The sleeping a lot more for a day or even 2 I wouldn't be worried about (as long as she otherwise seemed okay) since she came from a very stimulating overnighter at a doggie daycare. :D It s/l a wonderful place.

Honestly, 8 hours is not very long. Many dogs hold it for 8 hours per day. Overnight, Jackson will hold it 10-12 hours.

It sounds like she was just REALLY tired. I know with me when I am exhausted, I can sleep way longer than I ever thought, and hold my bladder too, LOL. So I think it's the same sort of thing.

Sounds like she had a very exciting day!
