Flexi Leads Hello everybody! :) Took Harry to our local pet shop this morning to get him a Flexi lead - my goodness I didn't realise there was so much choice!! So I came away with nothing!! Thought I'd wait til I'd asked you all - do you use one? And if so, which one? And did you buy a 'cord' or a 'tape' one? Sorry for all the questions! Sally + Harry x |
I think the larger ones have a "tape" that shows the first 18 inches or so, and that won't retract into the handle, after about 18 inches, it's cord. I would look for the type that fit my hand, and also the type that you can lock and use as a regular leash. I think most of the Flexi brand leashes you can lock. I bought a small one, and it was cord all the way, but it’s really too small for my hand and I can only put two fingers into it. There was a learning curve for me, but now I can even walk two dogs with an unlocked Flexi leash. I like the Flexi leash because the dog never gets tangled in the leash, but don't give the dog too much room unless you are in a very safe area without any big dogs or cars around. |
hi I use one it's a cord one i think the tape one is too have for a small dog i think it's better than a leas more freedom for the little one to run and sniff haha:D |

Thank you! :) It's strange - I've been around dogs for fifty + years, and I've never considered one before! It's just that near to where my parents live, there's some beautiful open space - but there's a lake in the middle, and I really don't want Harry's grooming going to waste!! ;) Sally + Harry x |

I love our flexi-leash. It gives her the feeling of more freedom. We've worn one out and are now on another one.:) |
My little 4 lb dog ate right thru the cord. We were at the mailbox, I stopped to sift through my mail and next thing I knew, he was running down the block. Now I use the most substantial tape leash I can find. |
We have the flexi with the tape. I don't like the cord type - it's rough and very thin. We don't use our flexi as much as we use a regular lead, but it's nice for the times we are in areas that Levi can sniff around. |
I agree with Nancy, the mini size is too small. Katie had the smallest pink one, and even with my tiny child sized hands, I could only get three fingers in, and if bf were to walk her, he had to use only two hands, like holding a delicate little teacup. LOL with pinky's out. Also it was 100% cord, so it would retract all the way to the clip. I found that if you were to let go or place the handle down, or god forbid drop the handle, the handle was so light that it would retract all the way and end up hitting the dog in the back of the head, or back. I have the "long" version. The handle size is perfect. Me and two of my friends all have this size and in black, but I must point out, all three of ours is different. Friend #1 got her's first. Her's on the cord, it has white woven into the cord, so it's easier to see, and the clip is chrome plated. Mine has 100% black cord and the clip is black. Now friend #2's is black and black like mine, but the handle/housing is HUGE! She's got pretty tiny hands too so it's hard for her to hold and lock the cord with one hand. I don't know if it's bc of the time we got them, they made some changes, well I guess that'd have to be the reason. We all ordered ours from Amazon. And yes the first 18" or so is tape that does not retract into the handle, and the remainder is cord. However, I have seen the ones for the big dogs, it is 100% tape. |
Also wanted to add that I would not purchase a retractable lead unless it was a Flexi. They are made in Germany and has much better quality than the ones you see at Ross or other places that are made in China. |

Yep, Flexi's are the ones I'm looking at - there are dozens of different types aargh! I'm dreadful actually - I got so confused by all the different weights and lead types and colours that I left the shop - and thought I'd ask all of you!! Sally + Harry x |

We had a mini pink one when we first got Bailey... To small for my hands, only 2 fingers as well! Then we got a bigger flexi leash with the black park and then cord and that is MUCH better. Then we went to TjMaxx and found a "doggy couture" leash, same type as flexi and it was so cute with purple flowers and paisly on it! SOOO CUTE! and it had a light<3. I was in love. So now we use that one. On Animal Planet, Victoria Stillwell says that you should only use a flexi type lead if your in open spaces like a field so they can have that sense of freedom, and you should use a regular old leash out for walks because flexi's can snap; and the dog can run away. Ah, who cares... Flexis work for ME! |
