Just sent my baby boy to have teeth out! My 9 month old (51oz.) Wally is having his shark teeth taken out this morning! He was neutered before we got him from the breeder (15 wks old), so they will only need to do his teeth today. Usually they take them out when they are neutered, but this does not apply to him! I am very worried about him, as he is SOOOO SMALL!!!!! He was supposed to be between 4-5 lbs, but I have my doubts he will even reach 4 lbs. Has any else had their 3 lb Yorkies teeth extracted? He is the best dog we have ever had, and I would die if anything happened to him! I also have this weird worry that the anesthesia will change his personality. He is very calm and laid back now, and worry that it will change him. I know..I know... silly! |
It's always worrisome when our little ones are having any procedure that requires anesthetic, but I'm sure your little Wally will be just fine. My Ruby was just at 3lbs when she was spayed and had 10 retained baby teeth removed. Reno is like your Wally, was neutered at 16 weeks and had retained baby teeth removed later. I've never had anesthetic alter a dog's personality for any longer than a day or two. Then it's just that they are sleepier, less energetic, not a true personality change. Good luck and please post an update and let us know how he did.:) |
Mine weren't that small when they had their teeth removed, but just the fact that your Wally has already been under the knife for his neuter and did fine is an indication that he can tolerate the anesthesia. I hope they did the pre-op blood tests and they use the proper anesthesia protocol for a little one. |
Well, they did not even suggest having blood work done! Jeepers! What does the blood work tell them? |
I have no experience, but wanted to say I hope all goes well! I will say a prayer for you guys! |

OK....Wally is home and doing fine! They said that there were lots and lots of teeth that needed to come out. I guess that they DID do some blood work that I had not known about and everything looked fine. The only thing was his blood sugar was a bit low, but that was because he did not have anything to eat since 8pm last nite. Yippee!! I will be fine now...and thanks to those of you that helped ease my fears! |
The blood work shows their values for kidney function, whether or not they are anemic and could be an indicator whether general anesthesia is safe. If I read your post correctly, they are removing retained baby teeth. If so, they may do/have done this under "twilight" sedation with a hypnotic type drug, thus not needing the blood work. The baby teeth hopefully slipped right out. It is so important to keep up with the Yorkie Dentals....kudos to You! |

sorry they neutered him at 15 weeks??? |
glad he's fine more people are concerned about neutering changing the personality I know I was, total farce |
I worried the same things with Harley when he got his baby teeth out. He came home just like his old self and even was ready to eat! It didn't phase him a bit :) |
Apparantly, Wally had "undescended" testicles and the breeder had him neutered even before he allowed him to be sold. (Around 13 weeks old I think.) I now am wondering if that is the normal protocol for breeders who have male puppies with this problem. I guess I did not question the breeder, as he made it seem that this was the best for Wally. It is amazing how we wonder about things after the fact!! |
