Hair questions for my 14 week old puppy I have a female 14 wk old puppy, she is my first yorkie/toy/female dog. I have so many questons about her care vet/groomer have helped some but I could really use some input. Lucy has a cotton coat, what is the best way to prevent mats, and remove them? She mats so easily. Will her coat possibly mature to more of a silky coat as she grows up? Also, her hair grows fast, she already has to have a full service groom to shorten her hair so it will not mat so badly. Will it slow down as she grows up? She is also a large puppy, she was the only puppy in her litter. She is over 5 lbs and mom and dad were 8lbs and 6lbs respectively will she prob be about 7 lbs full grown? Since that is in between her parents weights? Thanks in advance for the info. |
The coat texture most likely wont change and you may have to keep the body shaved to prevent matting. Sorry thats probably not what you wanted to hear but it is the reality those of us including me with yorkies with cotton coats face |
I am now monitoring this post as well, ha ha! Nilla's at 6 months and she seems to have a cotton coat unless her puppy coat is still in tact. She is matting TERRIBLY these past few weeks! I see a lot of conditioner in my and your future ... |
A good brush and comb are needed also |
What does a cotton coat feel like? Luvboduke...welcome to YT! :) |
Callie's puppy hair was crazy at matting but when she got her first grooming and they shaved it all off and her hair grew back it did not mat as bad and to this day even though I keep her in a puppy cut there are never any mats. As for the weight sometimes you can predict it and sometimes you can't she maybe a bigger yorkie just more to love :) |
Hi! Congrats on your little girl:) I don't have much advice on her coat as my girl never matted (I count my blessings on that one) My shih tzu has a coat that mats terribly and I've taken to keeping it short - seems like that is the type of coat a cotton coated yorkie has. But your girl is only 14 weeks old, so maybe her coat will change. As far as her weight/size goes, at 14 weeks if she's already 5 lbs she'll probably be close to 10 lbs as an adult. A 10 lb dog is still very small, though. And you'll have more yorkie to love:D |
Hello everyone. I'm sorry I have been MIA for a while, my laptop broke. I wanted to give everyone an update. My baby girl is growing up fast, she's about 7lbs now and has been for a while, she's 6mo old. She only has one baby tooth left. She even has her adult coat, it's blue & gold. And not near as cottony as it was. And to answer an earlier post it kind of feels like a cats coat. Very soft and fluffy. Thanks for your help everyone. |
