Has your Yorkie ever gone missing? Yesterday I let Norman into the backyard for a 'squirt' and a run. I took my eyes off of him for a second and - boom - he was gone! Unbeknownst to me the gate was open! It was a frantic 2 - 3 minutes while I got shoes, coat, treats and ran out the front door. We have coyotes in the area so I was panicked! I called his name once and could hear his tags jingling! Thank goodness he stayed close to home. I wonder if anyone else has ever had a panic attack whe their baby has gotten out of sight for a few minutes? |
Oh my goodness - yes, I have. A couple of months ago, my husband was in hospital with angina/heart problems. Harry was with me in the car that day, in his crate etc. I got the OK to take Harry to go see his 'daddy' and they had a brilliant half hour together. Then took him back to the car, gave Harry a drink and put him back in his crate. My mind was everywhere and I was sick with worry - and I didn't put the latch across properly on the crate. Now Harry always sits and waits until I give him the command. But I think, that day, he was determined to go and find his daddy. He shot out of the car, and went chasing across the car park in the direction from which we'd just come. It was manically busy there, with cars, ambulances and delivery trucks. I was actually crying and praying as I was running - I thought, I can't have this on top of everything else. But, suddenly, he stopped - round a corner, so at that point I didn't know he had. I was truly expecting the worst. Thank the Lord he'd realised I wasn't there, and had come back to find me. I shook for absolutely ages after that - and it still makes my blood run cold every time I think about it. Sally + Harry x |
Yes! We have a wooden basket-weave fence. My hubby put plastic chicken wire on the outside of it to deter wild animals getting in, and Izzy from getting out. WELL that little stinker would climb the wooden slats, up and over the chicken wire on the outside, and jump down and run away. Our neighbors brought her home a couple of times before we figured out how she was doing it, by sitting and watching her from a window (where she couldn't see us) She looked like a squirrel, the way she could climb that fence:laugh: So we chicken wired the INSIDE of the fence and thwarted her escape attempts. Liked to have given me heart failure, especially after running up and down the street hollering for her. It's scary:eek: |
It's such a horrible feeling! I had a million things running through my mind: cars, coyotes, dognappers...I felt completely sick to my stomach. They certainly are curious little beasties aren't they? |
I was taking Bailey out early one morning around the back alley of our neighborhood. We live in a gated community and a portion of the garages share an alley way. When we take a quick "morning relief", we don't use a leash. He stays close by so it's been fine. Bailey wanders down the alley a ways and I motion for him to come on back. He loves to take off running full speed towards me. When Bailey got near me, a Hawk, who had been eyeing Bailey for breakfast, realized I was there and flew out of the tree squawking madly. It scared the daylights out of me thinking Bailey could have been that Hawk's meal had he not come back to me when I called. We keep a sharp watch now up in the trees when he's off the leash!!!!!!!!! |
Yeah Brandi got out once. I was having some renovations done at my house, and the painters went out throught the garage door because they needed to put some stuff in the garbage. I then went to the garage to get something out of my car and Brandi follow me out to the garage. Because there were other people still doing some work in my house, I didn't even notice Brandi was missing until 30 minutes later. I knew that she had gotten outside because I did not close the garage door. I live on a cul de sac and there are plenty of foxes and hawks in my neighbhorhood. Thank God my neighbhor was having a a garage sale. The other thing that saved me from losing Brandi is that Brandi can't take two steps without stopping to smell something. She will sniff every blade of grass everytime we go for a walk. It can take 20 minutes just to go 15 ft. So I'm sure it took Brandi everybit of 30 minutes to even get to my neighbhors house who only lives a few feet away. Anyway when I went outside, my neighbhor was holding onto her. She was in fact on her way to my house when she stopped to help someone who was buying something from her garage sale. |
Dinky has not got loose yet. He slipped out of a harness once and went running, running, running; but he stopped when we screamed his name. He loves "chasing" squirrels, but of course he can't get too far, even on his long leash. We have had a few close calls. I have imagined him getting loose at night when I take him out, running into the darkness... scary. |
Gracie got out 3 times before she turned a year old. One time she sneaked out when we were going out the door. It was a planned event by her. She rushed the door from the other side of the room and escaped. She went running as fast as she could. We live some distance from the road. She had to go up an incline of about 10 yards and then she started running for the road about another 20 yards away. We all went running after her and yelling her name but she was intent on getting to the road. Thank God we got her in time. Once she got out when the cable guy was going in and out fixing a problem with the internet connection. He found her up by the road when he was leaving. Of course she went right to him and he brought her back. I thought she was locked in my daughter's room with her. She got out another time when repair people were here. I don't know what she thinks is so interesting out there but we also have coyotes and hawks and owls around. It is such a sense of panic that I have felt when she does this. I have a degenerative spine and cannot run so thankfully there have been others around to help get her. She has not done it in quite a while now. I hope she realizes how she caused her mom such panic attacks with her adventures. She has tags and is chipped but that is little comfort when the little girl is dashing toward the road. |
I dont know if they just become more obedient when they are older but mine would never get away from us. We let them out of leash when we are getting groceries out of the car and they just stay with us. When Chachi was younger he would take off down the street. But in answer to your question no mine have never been lost or somewhere where I couldnt find them |
I thought Sophie was missing a couple of times but each time I found her behind a closet door I had just shut ;). |
Delilah has escaped a few times... especially when she was a puppy. She was so small that she could fit in between the gate. We found her, obviously. She was running the neighborhood. She hasn't gotten out in a long time. When we take her places and get home, we usually let her out of the car without a leash on and she is pretty good about coming in the house. This one time, she went running the other way. I jumped into the car and drove up by her and honked the horn. Then I yelled out the window "want to go for a ride in the car" and she jumped in without hesitation. We live in the country though... with only a few houses around. |
First off Great post! It helps me not feel so alone:rolleyes: Roscoe got out a couple months ago when the kids were walking inside. My kids are 4 and 6 and I have NEVER ran so fast(and I am a runner:p)! As soon as I saw him slip out the door I took off running full speed with my kids left shocked in the doorway. I ran a couple of blocks before he stopped to sniff a fire hyrdrant:rolleyes: I scooped him up and just bawled into his body... I have never been so scared before, all I could think of was I have to get to my little guy as we have cars running in and out of our neighborhood all the time. Thank goodness he ended up being okay because he shook me up so bad. Now he wont even try to go out the front door without me. I think it scared him too having me chase him like a physco :p |
When Suzi was young she slipped out of her harness under a fence, I recently had surgery and could not run after her, what really was bad was someone in the apartment complex grabbed her and let her inside their apt. I saw the whole thing, and jsut was shocked, and scared , ready to cry .Their were 2 little girls who also saw what happend and they knocked on the door , it took the m a while to answer and when they did the girls got her for me , Suzi was shaking so bad after it happened , I was so upset that people could just grab her like that .:( Anther time Suzi got away from my niece who was dog sitting, they watched Suzi run to a little boy who picked her up , then they were able to get her. All this happened before she was a year old , SUzi now does not every go down the stairs off the balcony , neither does my shih tzu , I am very lucky for that. |
it is THE MOST frightening and helpless feeling ever. the first time it happened, it didn't even really happen! Bf took Uni with him and he didn't tell me. He went to go pick up parts from a vendor so I of course thought he didn't take her. I was busy with a customer so wasn't really paying attention, as our doors are usually closed. After the customer left I went to look for her in her usual spots and she wasn't anywhere to be found! Bf had both of the phones so I couldn't call him. I had to run out and ask the customer if I could borrow his phone, and meanwhile I was riding around on one of the bikes calling her name. I felt like I was gonna pass out. I finally got through to bf and he heard the shakyness in my voice so he didn't mess with me, and said yes Uni was with him. There was one time she got out for real. She sometimes will take herself out to pee. This time she went around the corner! Luckily a lady saw her and picked her up and looked like she was looking at her tag to call. That was about 15 secs and that was so scary! We took her on her leash later that day back to that spot to try to figure out what happened and why she took off. We found there was a squirrel hiding out in the bushes and I guess she was trying to get him. She was in big trouble that day. She spent about an hour on time out. (That means she lays on her bed in the other room and doesn't get to be with us.) |
Once with my first yorkie, Jessie, we came home and she was nowhere to be found. Usually she would be at the window looking for us and run to the top of the steps to wait for us to come up the stairs. I started looking everywhere throughout the house, under the beds, in the closets etc. I was shaking and crying and my husband was freaking out too. Then I heard a sound behind the door which is a guest bedroom where the door is always closed. She must have followed me in that room before I left and door shuts behind you so she got locked in. OMG the worst feeling when I thought I lost her but the best feeling when I found her. She was no worse for wear. |
