Wild bird poop harmful to yorkies I have my wild bird feeder in the grass, I was looking in the area the feeder is in and all around it is food droppings, ( saflower seed) also tons of poop in the grass.. I wasn't sure if it is harmful if Peanut walks in there or sniffs around if it is harmful- I know wild birds carry a lot of diseases so I don't know what can be transfered by poo- if any... |
I thinking you are risking your baby getting diarrhea. Our bigger dogs went after some, and that is what happened.. |

I know Peanut doesn't eat any of it, he wont even eat a piece of bird food- so I wasn't so much worried about that, it sniffing it or walking over it then licking his paws... I def think I'm going to move it and try to clean it up.. P.s I was watching your avatar- your babies are so cute!! |
That is such a good question. Can wild bird poop make my dog sick ?I hope someone has a good answer for us. My Yorkies eat a few bird seeds once in awhile, but I have never noticed any bad effects. My bird feeders are in a small garden area of my yard. I think the plant misters rinse off the poop. Our Lab drinks out of the bird bath but, I have never noticed her getting into the seed or anything. |
I don't know about the poop, but all those smaller birds around a feeder attract something worse. -- hawks. I wouldn't have a feeder in my yard for that reason alone. |
I have cockateils in the house. I do not allow my dogs near the cages. Seed is not good for them, feathers can puncture their intestines and poop carries ecoli. You might want to move the feeder to where the babys cannt get to the droppings. |
I just read that a wild bird has 60 diseases! Some your dog can get if they eat the poop, or just sniff! I am taking my bird food away! I am either going to put it up on the hill where Pnut cant get to it, or take it away all together... I already raked up where it was, all the poo and seed that has dropped... also I read where it can grow mold! :thumbdown nasty!! |
Here is the website, very interesting! Diseases People Can Catch from Birds - Can My Bird Make Me Sick - Zoonotic Illnesses You Can Get From Pet Birds |

I read they can have up to 60 known diseases!! Crazy who knew! |
I read inside/ pet bird poo wasn't as harmful as wild bird poo.. they are obviously both harmful, but wild birds have more diseases.... I'm guessing. |
I know my mom's Cairn got geardia (i know i botched that spelling) from brid poop under their bird feeder. |
Thanks. I read this and paid the teenage boy next door, to move the bird bath and feeder out side the fenced area. I guess we are very blessed. They have been there for many years, with no problems. But why take a chance, right ? I know quite a bit about pet birds (but haven't had a pet parrot for over 20 years.) I worked for a large aviary when I was younger. I learned to hand feed baby birds and how to train birds for animal shows. I even attended classes given by an Avian Vet. I learned so much. It was a wonderful experience. The aviary I worked for raised and sold birds to pet stores. And we attended bird shows( sort of like a dog show) all over the US. All of their birds were domestic bred birds. Birds are super smart and need as much attention as Yorkies do. I had to choose did I want my Doggies or a parrot. So here I am, the 'crazy dog lady' that lives down the street. LOL |
