Ok one of my maniacs ate a half a loaf of bread AND the plastic bag!!!!! I bought 2 loaves of bread and I had them on the kitchen table. I was busy on the table so I put them on the chair. I went into my daughters room and I was pinning her curtains because they were too long. I go back in the kitchen and the bread is half eaten and half of the bag is missing too!!! They knew they were in trouble. I think it was Trixie because she is tall and could reach the chair. The others are too small. I guess I'm gunna have to check poop tomorrow!!! |
Oh, boy! I know yeast dough is bad for them, because it is one of the items listed in the s/i forum. I just don't know and I don't think bread you buy would be as bad, but I'd still be kinda nervous. Have you called anyone? Yikes! I just saw they ate the plastic bag! You better get rollin' to er. |
I would be extremely worried about the ingested plastic. Problem is, which dog do you take to the er?? Plus the tall one could have pulled the bread off the chair, but the rest could have gone in on it once it was on the ground. |
I'm thinking about the length of a loaf of bread. Average is, what, 10++ inches? If one of them ate 1/2 loaf, I'd think they would be extremely bloated.... Not sure how much they would want to do for the plastic, but they may worry about the bread expanding (would happen much more with dough, but probably still possibly with bread). I'd be thinking about going in and at a bare minimum calling to see if they thought I should come in so they could start treatment. |

I would call the vet ASAP and if he's unavailable, call the nearest ER vet to see if there is any reason for concern. That much dough and plastic in a tiny intestine could lump and possibly obstruct maybe - don't know but I would check it out. |

Half eaten is often used as an expression, and does not always mean a literal half. Maybe that is the way it was meant. |
I sure hope so. |

Now there is no need for name calling here. However, IMO I would have been off to the vet. When you call them they always say just keep an eye on them. |

When it's not there you will go to the vet to deal with an obstruction? I hope the plastic bag isn't into the intestines and is still in the stomach where it can possibly be removed without surgery-even small pieces of plastic are very dangerous it doesn't break down. You already changed your story. Twice. capt Nookie noted and you responded changing it-[perhaps you were just being very dramatic in your initial posting? I don't agree with calling you an idiot, but really banned for expressing their concern that a dog, your dog can actually die from this. let alone all four of your dogs now. I think you should realize how much people care and how intense their concern is. Although I did call someone something similar for breeding a beagle with a small Yorkie female...sometimes the show just fits IMHO but nevertheless not appropriate on here. She didn't exactly call you an idiot though and may have misread what you said thinking you were calling me one...I think she misunderstood and was responding to it that way. If I had four I'd know that in an emergency you might have to take four to the vet. I know if mine get into something I'll have 3 to take to the vet and three vet bills...:aimeeyork:aimeeyork:aimeeyork |
While I do like to be better safe than sorry, I don't think this necessarily warrants bringing FOUR dogs into the ER when you are not sure who ate what, or to come down hard on the OP. The name calling all together is really ridiculous and immature. It's stuff like this that makes people leave, and then we never find out what happened to the dogs in question. Basically, plastic bag/wrapper could definitely inflict harm (i.e. lodging in the intestines) but it could also easily be passed. Just depends on how much was ingested in each dog, etc. Our JRT mix ate sooo many water balloons this summer (some of them were filled with water still, and swallowed ) We had her x-rayed twice and nothing ... she had passed them all (we saw them in her poop). Our Golden Retriever also used to eat my socks as a young dog and it was gross, but she passed them all. Dogs eat a lot of stupid stuff -- with little dogs, I think I wouldn't take as many chances. Accidents happen but I think it's what you feel comfortable with. If it were my dog, I'd certainly be calling the ER but I don't think I'd be rushing in, either. I'd probably schedule an appt. at our regular vet the next day just to maybe get an x-ray or at least get the vets opinion. I think a lot of times this turns into one of those wait-and-see things and it's just a matter of what an owner is confident with doing. I'd definitely be watching out for vomiting, constipation, diarrhea, etc. The sitting and waiting around thing wouldn't work for me because I think I'd be WAY too paranoid. |
