What do you do about "excited" urinating? Lexi (14 weeks) is being potty pad trained & does well going on command at night when I take her from our bed & place her the pad. She has accidents during the day but we are working on it. Many times within minutes of urinating well on the pad & then allowed to run free (with supervision) she will pee a couple times very small amounts. I think it is due to excitement. Other than catching her in the process & taking her to her pad & encouraging potty on her pad, is there anything else I can do? |
Excitment peeing can turn into submissive urination, which takes place in older dogs who usually who've been yelled at or worse for peeing in the wrong spot. Fourteen weeks is young, and they can't hold it very long. If you leave her out of the pen a pad should always be close by. My breeder told me to praise the success and ignore the mistakes. Have lots of Natures Micacle around and use it to clean up mistakes so that she won't be tempted to return to the spot. Here's more information, the good news is puppies usually outgrow excitment peeing, just be careful you don't create submissive urination. I had a border collie puppy that did that. The good news was she outgrew it on her own. We did not try to correct her because I am not even sure she was aware of what she was doing. |
Good-I think I have been doing it okay. :) I have been saying "oh-oh" (no reprimanding other than that) & just take her to her potty pad & with a positive voice say go potty on potty pad. (I can tell she is trying to process what I am saying.) I have also started giving her a small piece of biscuit as a reward whenever I see her in the process of using her potty pad as she is very motivated by them ;) I am really glad to hear she may very well outgrow it. I actually think she does very well for the most part as young as she is. I just wanted to make sure I wasn't doing something wrong whereby I instill a bad behavior. Thank you so much. :) |

Yep - handling it brilliantly! :) I really do think it's time that will sort it out (along with your positives) - we had a really quite submissive labrador girlie who had this problem, and I really don't think she knew she was even doing it. You couldn't even be harsh-voiced with her (not that we ever wanted to!!). Even she grew out of it - eventually! Good luck! Sally + Harry |
