Spaying little bitty ones???

Bryleigh is now 5 months old. My vet recommends spaying her before she hits 7 mths.... He said it's best before their first heat to help prevent cancer...

Anyways, bryleigh is currently 2.4 pounds... I know she will grow alittle more, but I don't think she's going to be a very big girl. My vet said he is worried about putting her completely under because of her size. He said he may just use gas and numb up her tummy with a local anesthetic....

Does anyone have experience with spaying these tiny ones? When is it safe?

I hope you get an answer to this question because my lil girl is 3 pounds and almost 5 months old and my vet is telling me to bring her in soon to get fixed. They tell me they have a "special" anistetic for little ones and I totally trust my vet but I am one scared momma! When we were there last week she was fixing a 4 pound yorkie and he came out just fine. But that yorkie was no MY yorkie. I am really stressing on this. I know I have to get her fixed but...... she is sooooooo little!

MadDeDo 11-11-2011 04:09 PM

My DeDe was 2.1 lbs when she was spayed at 6 months. She did great! She had her knee surgery 2 months later and was around 2.6 lbs, and came through with flying colors again. We did the full blood chemistry before the surgery both times because she had had other health issues, and plus it's just a good idea...especially with the tinies. My vet used only the gas on her because of her size. My little boy Dreamer was 2.8 lbs when he was neutered. He did really well too. :)

Thx!!! That makes me feel so much better!!!

Kaos 11-11-2011 07:10 PM

Kaos was about 2.5lbs when he was neutered. I know its a bit different, but my biggest concern was the anastetic vs. size as well. I was a nervous wreck when I brought him in! The vet told me to relax, that they do it all, every day. (mobile clinic) and for some reason it put me at total ease. :)

I would worry more if your vet is not 100% to do the surgery. My vet assured me all would go great and they do spays/neuters all the time on small ones and even on ferrets!! We had Keegan 3 lbs 6 ounces neutered and Fufu 3 lbs 6 ounces spayed and all went great! We did blood work first to make sure all was good and I did also pay extra for fluids under the skin. Fufu bounced back faster then Keegan did too!! Keegan kept looking for his nuggets for a week or so. The biggest problem I ever had was to keep them quite for a week and no jumping!! LOL Has she any retained puppy teeth? You can have them removed at the same time. I waited until my Nadia was a year before fixing her and hadnt came into heat yet, but you never know!!

I think the most important thing is to have a vet you trust and that deals with these little ones. I don't know where in Texas you live but my breeder suggested a vet in Rock Wall that deals with these little babies all the time. I ended up using my vet because she is really good and I trust her so much with mine. We waited until Dudley hit 4lbs. and 6mo. old before he was fixed. He did great and I was a nervous wreck. These little babies just scare you being so tiny, but, he did fine and I'm sure yours will too. Just have a good vet.

I do trust my vet... He has yorkies too, lol. But I've got to still worry!! Just wanted to hear that others have been just fine!! And now I have!:D

I waited until right at Mina's 6mths age,she weighed 4.5lbs. Between 5 & 6 months she had a big growth spirt. She did pretty well, but my vet didn't want to keep her under very long so she still has her baby canines,,,looks kind of like a prianaha.
Also the pain meds (medacam)made her tummy very upset.

My Jasmine was under 3 lbs when she was spayed just over 2 yrs ago & she did great. I think it depends on what anaesthetic the Vet uses.

Pheebies Mommy 11-12-2011 03:10 AM

We had Pheebie a few weeks ago. She is 4.3 lbs (5 1/2 months) and also did great. I had the same concerns about size and anesthesia but she did great! Our vet prefers to keep them overnight but I wasn't having it and they let me bring her home that night. She did great - what was amazing is she never even bothered her stiches....kept watching her to see if she needed her hood thing (we got the intertube type one) but she never touched them. Until the 9th day post op, guess the stitches were itchy so she dragged her belly on the rug in the kitchen, the stiches caught on the rub and when she dragged her belly, the stitches came out. Oh well....we were going to have them removed on day 10. Would have preferred the vet take them out but what can you do? LOL! She has a little scar tissue on her belly from the incidnet but it's getting smaller and vet says its fine.

So....hope that helps! It's still scary putting your little one out but sounds like your vet is a really good one! :-)

Kendra, we were in that same situation with Gidget, she was so small. Finally did it and she actually did better than my other girls. Biggest thing, I think is having a vet who is experienced and fast doing surgery.

It's okay for a 2.4lb girl to be spayed. It is not okay that your vet isn't 100% comfortable. It is also not okay that he plans to use a local for a spay??? First, masking down with isoflurane, he would likely have to use a higher level to get her deep enough than if he were to give an injectable before. Also, she probably won't wake up all too happy with this method... A local injection couldn't possibly numb all the areas that need to be numbed unless I am completely missing something. And then it sounds like he wants to have the gas lighter if he is going to do it that way. I would not have my dog light for an abdominal surgery. If he wasn't going to have her light, then there is no need to numb her abdomen. I would get a second opinion to make sure his plan is adequate for your girl. When in doubt, it can be performed at a specialty hospital with an anesthesiologist on staff.

megansmomma 11-12-2011 06:30 AM

I would not allow my dog to be spay in this manner. No way~no how not with an abdominal surgery. I could see if it were something that was not so invasive but not a spay. That is too deep into the abdomen. If this were suggested to me I would think twice and then look into a specialty hospital that could handle to intubate a small dog properly. Do you realize the amount of injectable that would be needed to try to control her pain? I really suggest that you get a second opinion and not go this route.

I agree, and if a vet suggested something this bizarre I would run, not walk, out of his office.

Barbaric imo.

Surgeries are done all of the time on small pups...and other animals. My vet suggests waiting until 6 months for a spay.
