Dog Insurance? Hi everyone, I am picking up my new baby Yorkie next week and am planning to get pet insurance for him. Our previous Yorkie had many health problems that caused us to spend $30K in medical bills in 1.5 years. Sadly he has passed on. While we've done our due diligence in finding a healthy pup through a reputable breeder, I'm still nervous about health issues and want to get insurance. Does anyone recommend a good policy that covers both accidents and illness? Thanks, Katie |
I'm not familiar with US companies cause I'm in Canada but I will say make sure you do your research. I've found myself out of insurance already and my policy year starts in July for GI illnesses. Simply because I didn't read the fine print. |
I don't know how to copy a thread and paste it here...but if you click on my name and look at the threads I posted, I have one about pet insurance and Maximo linked some really awesome threads with good information. I insured my little one this September...and I am getting my $$$ worth now, so thankful I got it, Furgie got really sick this week but is finally feeling better! Good luck! |
When researching, I narrowed it down to Embrace, Petplan, and Trupanion. Then after reading more, I crossed Trupanion off. My favorite are the other two. We have Petplan. Read the contract very carefully though. |
We have Petplan on all three of ours...we made out first claim last Tuesday and the ck was mailed out 2 days ago for the full amount I was expecting. They cover accident, sickness, genetical issues, etc. as long as it occurs AFTER the policy started. There are different plans to choose from. I have a plan with a $200 deductible then it pays 100% which came in handy with my little guys $3000 bill!! |
I've checked into 3 different plans and selected VPI. Highly recommended by my vet as well; he bills directly and I get the reimbursement within 2 weeks. There are several levels of coverage to choose from. I believe we have the Superior plan (if this is the highest one) as I find myself taking Romeo to the vet even if he vomits once. Good luck with your search and I hope you find an insurance plan that works for you and you new baby. |
insurance you can check with petsmart. they have very good plane for all ages of dog. I have a puppy he is 6 month old. I purchase 1 year puppy plan for about 550 its include get him fix, shots, check up and unlimited dr visit. HOpe this will help. Tito mom:) |
Yes, we had the PetSmart/Banfield plan with our previous pup, Fosse, but with his extensive amount of care it didn't help when we had to go to the actual veterinary hospital (instead of just Banfield). I am praying our new lil' guy doesn't have any of the problems that Fosse did - pneumonia, GME diagnosis, liver/kidney disease, and a corneal ulcer... all in one and a half years - but I want to be prepared just in case. Thanks for all your help, I think I'll look into both Petplan and VPI. Katie |
I think VPI is a great company. It just wouldn't work for our family because they have a benefits schedule (they will only pay what they consider to be reasonable costs for each thing - and the vet offices we go to tend to charge much more than those prices...). |

Trupanion Keep in mind this is from trupanion themsleves so the questions are probably rigged to make them look the best but it is still another point of comparison with several of the other insurance companies. I looked this up because it's one of the insurance companies my vet gave me info on. Trupanion vs. Petplan - Compare Pet Insurance Companies | Trupanion |
We have the ASPCA insurance. Very good coverage for the new guy at a decent price. |

Any one hear od review for pet assure? it is offered with my job, wanted to know if anyone has experience with them |
Due you mind my asking why you ruled out Trupanion? I have a new male puppy and after some research I choose Trupanion for him. I am also purchasing a female, she will be ready at Christmas and plan on purchasing insurance on her as well. Now I'm wondering if I made the right choice. Any information anyone can provide is appreciated. |
