Hello Everyone.. Hello everyone, My name is Rosalind and I'm a new owner of a yorkie named Brandy. I have lots to ask about but for now I want to say hi and ask a question. My poor pup has a cough and has been on antibiotics for 7 days but is still coughing what should I do?:( please help someone :aimeeyork |
Hi, Rosalind! Congrats on your little baby. i'm sorry she's not feeling well. If she finishes her course of antibiotics and is still having issues, I would schedule another vet appt. I hope she feels better soon! |
Welcome to YT. Your Vet would know what to do. This is not advice, just telling you about my dogs. Ginny Joy she had a cough as a puppy when I brought her home. It was because she had an irritated throat from eating mulch, pee pad pieces and other junk. We had to watch her all the time because she is a real chewer. When Rubin was neutered he got Kennel Cough. He had to take antibiotics and got well but it took more than a few days. |
Thank you I have went back to the pet shop where I got her and they told me if she is still coughing by monday they'll take her in for a visit. I'm giving her lots of rest and she is eating, drinking and playing. She just has that dry cough and it's worse in the night. Thank you Hugs from us:aimeeyork |

Also, just a couple of questions (sorry! :)) How old is little Brandy? And who put her on the antibiotics in the first place? Sally + Harry x |
thanks Brandy is about 7 days away from being 3 months old. A vet had put her on the antibiotics and told me her tonsils were inflamed. The regiment was 7 days antibiotic and four days cough medicine She has been eating and playing but the cough kills her in the night. Some sites say the meds work the first four days and other say it takes a while. I don't want to return her, what should I do? I'm taking her to the vet in the morning. |
Brandy is about 7 days away from being 3months. The antibiotics were given to her by a vet along with a cough med to help her through. I also was advised to use a humidifier and a veporizer, which I did. She started eating and playing and doing eveything normal, but last night she started to cough like a goose honk. scary. I got up gave her lots of water she got comfty and went back to bed. I don't want to return her, WHat should I do? |

If your puppy is eating, playing with nothing else going, and coming from a pet store i am betting it has kennel cough and this can last for 3 to 4 wks not fatale |
If you got her at a pet shop she is from a puppy mill and I would not go back to the pet store and I would not trust there vet. I would find a different vet that has nothing to do with the pet store and take her there. Good luck if it is kennel cough it can take awhile to get rid of. For future reference do not buy from pet stores because it is keeping puppy mills in business. |
I bought Buster from a Pet Shop ( I know I learned a hard lesson) He came home and the first night I noticed he had a bad cough. He had a very tough case of kennel cough that took over a month to go away and I ended up having to leave him at the hospital for three days as it almost became pneumonia. I know you love Brandy so the best thing is to take her to a vet and while there also have them test for worms and parasites. Buster had Giardia and Coccidia as well which the pet shop also knew and did not warn me about. :( . It is very important to go to the vet because they are so small and can get really sick if not treated properly. When they on antibiotics it helps to give the probiotics to help restore the good bacteria in their stomachs that the antibiotics kill while the are killing the infection. I used and still use Pet Dophilus . Also make sure not to get any vaccinations until you are sure your puppy is healthy and do not take them into pet stores or around other dogs as kennel cough is contagious. Depending on your state some have lemon laws for puppies and the breeder has to assume the cost for medical bills up to a certain percentage of what you paid for the puppy and you don't have to return the dog but you must have proof from a vet. I would see another vet than one suggested by the pet store because they check the pets and some times say they are healthy when they are not. Buster got better and has been the joy of my life. Good luck and best wishes to you and your baby. By the way Hi and welcome to YT. |

You should read this thread. Many vets also prescribe cough suppressants for the pups with kennel cough, so they can rest. Robitussin is the one often prescribed and this thread discusses the amount to use. http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/sic...ets-cough.html |

One of my dogs came down with kennel cough, she is older. It took two rounds of antibiotics (approx 14days) and she coughed once or twice a day for the next 3 weeks. Make sure your baby get plenty of rest. Hope your baby feels better soon. |
All wonderful advice, of course! :) In the meantime, I personally am a very firm believer in honey. I would put some in a little warm water to alleviate his night-time coughing, just before he goes to bed. Good luck to you both, and hope all goes well at the vets :) Sally + Harry x |
Thank you everyone for the good advice. I will try the honey and the Robitussin if the vet says its ok because shes only 3.5lbs to 4lbs now. I took her to the vet last night and they told me everything is clear with her but she needs lots of rest. Unfortunally I left her their for a few days because I have a four year old that won't let her rest so my heart broke leaving her. I want you guys to know she did not come home with the cough, I took her to the vet almost a week after I got her because she had the runs. The vet told me she had no worms or parasites but that it could be the transition of foods that made her tummy upset. Later that night she started to sneeze and that developed into the cough and here we are. The pet shop owner has been very helpful with my problem but I think it was when I took her into the ER that she caught the cough from another animal their. As for the lemon law in the state of NY I had only 14 days to return or get my money back but as for medical expenses the pet shop is working with me. FYI the pet shop is certified with state and the ASPCA I did my research and the puppies don't come from puppy mills, her only gets two types of puppies yorkies and shih tzus and only gets then in at small numbers and not all year around only around the fall. THe pet shop mainly deals with birds when puppies are available they sell quick. Not to pick up for the pet shop. if anymore info please get back to me. thanks again. |
