average weight What's the average weight of most adult yorkies? I read the breed standards is 5-7 pounds. But I read here there are lot of smaller yorkies and some bigger ones too. For the ones who are a little heavier. Are they just taller as well as larger or is it just a weight issue? I have a co worker whose yorkie was the runt but she's now 10 pounds. |
I'd say the average weight is about 7 pounds. Mine is about about 5 1/2 pounds and she's 2. Of course there are yorkies that weigh 3 - 4 pounds fully grown. I read somewhere in breed standards that yorkies are not to exceed 7 pounds, but don't quote me on that. Not sure about a 10 pound yorkie being a runt. Lol. If the yorkie is purebred, maybe he/she is not getting enough exercise or is eating too much. Just not sure about that. |
Breed standard states that a yorkshire terrier "must not exceed 7lbs." As to the runt that is now 10lbs, "runt" is only comparable to the rest of the litter. Perhaps they all exceeded standard. There seem to be a whole lot of "yorkies" that are exceeding standard though (and just alot of poorly bred yorkies in general...) I'm not sure why this is, but it would sure make me question the ethics of the breeders. AKC papers used to mean something....I don't know that they mean so much anymore. I see so many adds for pups that don't come with papers, but if you really want papers, they can up with up them??? Either the litter is a registered AKC litter or it isn't. How do you really know who the parents of your puppy are? Based on the quality of yorkie pups I see I personally believe many breeders are doing some serious paper shuffling. |
4-7lb is the range of yorkie. |
There are many members here who have "teapot" yorkies... Mine are 6 lbs, 4.4 lbs, and 2.4 lbs (she's still growing but prob won't be much over 3 lbs)..... I love Em all!!! Big or small!!! |

A bigger yorkie just has bigger features like a tiny yorkie has tiny features. Bigger yorkie dosent always mean overweight. |
Princess was very healthy & well proportioned at 7lbs. and even when she filled out post spay at 8lbs. Now she's up to 9 & it's too much for her build. You can tell by how easy it is to feel ribs, see tucks & curves, etc. I will add though, that even at 9lbs. she's not a teeny dog but she's still very small (to me anyways). |
Actually the standard is 7lbs and under. Id say the average is 5-7 lbs |
My co-worker's yorkie doesn't have any papers but I think the weight is coming from a lack of exercise. Her yorkie is a little diva dog.:aimeeyork I don't want a dog over 7 pounds. I don't want a yorkie that is too tiny but I personally prefer one 7 pounds or less. |

Ok I understand. I will be taking a chance since I am looking to buy a puppy. Well I took a chance on my Kirby and things turned out great. I am sure I will love the new pup no matter what the size too. |
