choosing a yorkie from the litter, 24 days old too young to tell? Hi, I'm picking up my yorkie mid to end of december, its a long drive to get her so i've been sent photos(i love in a remote area,i've been looking for a yorkie for a year but noone sells them here, so buying away was my only choice), there are 3 females in the littre. Is 24 days old too young to tell, there is one smaller one in the photos and one looks like it has a smaller snout, will this change as they get older, will the snout grow out more, i can't tell which one i should choose, there are other people who have deposits on them too, and i don't want to be left with last pick, any suggestions in what i should look for while picking her out, or is it too early to tell? i was going to upload the photos but i don't know how?can anyone tell me how to upload photos too, apperciate the help, Michelle |
Yes, it would be for me because you can't tell about the jawline set, coat, temperament, size/set of the ears - just to name a very few. |
ok thank you, I guess I will have to research more on that and what i should look for when it starts to get a bit older |
I've found it easy to rule out what I don't like, even at a young age....but it's harder to narrow down what I do like. And I don't know that there's anyway to tell what adult coat will be like from young puppies, other than guessing based on the parents. |
3 Attachment(s) I think I've attached the photos of the 3 girls I have to choose between, but yes they probably are way too young to tell, one looks like it has a very small snout though |
2 Attachment(s) and heres the dad and mom |
24days is WAY too young to tell, my clients don't get to choose until the babies are at least 8 to 10 weeks, and they pick in the order they are in the waiting contact list.. I will advise your breeder to send update pictures weekly so you can see them grow and by the time they are 10 weeks you can probably choose the one that tags your heart.. |
wow...that one snout does look pretty short. It all depends on what you personally like the look of. I know yorkies that I personally find the most appealing often differ from what other people like. I prefer a narrower terrier face, not a rounder...eyes further apart "teddybear" type face. That different people attach different connotations to words and phrases also makes it more difficult. As hard as it sometimes is, the best thing is to see the pups in person. You may just connect with one more than another. |
ok thanks, My last dog I went when it was 8 weeks and picked the one I connected with, however,I have never bought a dog long distance, and the 2 other people who have deposits live close to her, I just am scared I'm going to be left without having a choice, but yes i will get her to send me photos as they get older and hope noone picks thiers out before me,thank you |
yes kazzyk810, I agree I prefer a narrower face too,I really wish i could see them in person but it is a 16 hour drive to get to and from where they are, they are the closest yorkies i've been able to find all year, there was a woman in my area selling silkys convinced they are yorkies(the parents were over 10 lbs), but it was either drive 16 hours or buy a silky, i perfer the yorkies, i really dislike buying long distance, but i have had my heart set on a yorkie all year |
anyways thanks everyone for the help:), I suppose I will just have to wait for photos and videos when they are a bit older and hope i don't get last choice, i am so excited though to bring my new baby yorkie home!:) I have bought so many toys and accesories for her, she is going to be one spoiled girl :):aimeeyork |
Personally I wouldn't choose the one with the shorter snout because I'm seeing it as a major flaw that could cause some breathing problems. The other two look really nice and normal, but again you can't tell what the coat will be like at this age, or how long the legs and body will get. When you buy from a breeder they won't keep the pups longer than 3 months and by that time all are generally spoken for. Can you ask the breeder to let you have the pick of the girls when they are about 9 weeks anyway if you go see them at that age. They are running around, playing, growling, jumping on each other, playing with toys and developing their personalities. You could watch them for about an hour to see if they are outgoing, walking and running ok, have bright clear eyes, can hear and so on. (make a list) Put a deposit on the one you choose, (if you do decide on one) and also ask the breeder to make up a contract that she will buy back the puppy (the same amount as you paid) in the event your Vet. finds any major medical problems that you aren't prepared to pay for, such as LP, liver disease, heart disease and the like. Well that is my suggestions. ;) Good luck to you. |
Getting a new puppy is such an exciting time! My pup is now 11 months old and I'm just starting to look for a lil sister for her. Not having much success so far, but I'm not in any rush. Yorkies live a long time and so are a huge commitment. I'd much rather wait and get exactly what I want....even though the waiting part isn't easy. Oh the spoiling has only just begun! Just wait til your baby is in your home and you are looking into those beautiful brown eyes everyday, it'll be hard to resist getting anything you come across that you think she might like :) |

My personal opinion...Would be to only purchase for quality with confirmed references vs. "distance". Please don't be in a hurry to choose just because someone else may beat you to it either. As pointed out earlier...it's hard to tell what your puppy will look like at this age if this is part of your method of choosing. Although I prefer adopting Yorkies, I realize that not everyone is going to do that and so, I'd rather encourage you take your time and do your diligent homework on the Breeder of your choice vs. the location or the look in the Yorkie you have to choose from. Be patient because this little baby will be with you for a good many, many years! Good luck and congrat's on whichever little girl you choose! |
