I am NOT a chew toy! I just recently got a beautiful little girl, and she wont stop chewing on me! She chews on everything...and its painful her teeth are sharp! Has anyone else experienced this, or have any suggestions on how to get her to stop biting? |

She is a little cutie pie for sure! Remember she is just a pup and chewing is something that pups do. It is one way they learn about their world. She is getting to know you, your scent and your taste. Just tell her "no bite" and move your hand away when her teeth hurt. I loved that stage. All of my guys teethed on my fingers, toes, ears, etc. They have all grown up to be respectful non-biting members of our family. My best advice is to cherish every single day of puppyhood 'cause all too soon it's gone. |
Adding to my last post, be sure that she has plenty of safe chew toys and when you get tired of being her chew toy replace your body part with a different chewey. |
Well that is some comfort knowing she wont grow up to keep biting me. I figured she would grow out of it, but I was a little concerned. She is getting better at not biting so hard, but some times it gets aggravating. Quote:

I recommend when her teeth come in contact with your skin say in a deep loud voice, "OUCH!" (not squeaker, really low), and that'll startle her into removing her teeth, the second she releases, praise her and give her a toy or treat. We did this with Harley and now if we say ouch, he comes back and kisses the spot he bit, not sure how we taught him that, but it's cute as can be. Also don't play with your hands, If you like to "play fight" with your pup, get a puppet that is designed for dogs, so that the pup does not associate your hands with being a toy. |

She is so cute! Make sure you have bones and chew toys for her to chew on. When Callie was a puppy and was in her nipping phase we used a squirt bottle and would squirt her when she would nip and say no. |
I have written so many times about nipping and how to correct it gently and redirect this young puppy chewing behavior. Check our YT threads , search nipping. Depending on the age of your puppy different methods are used. (Never hit or scream at your pup.) It is not natural for people to push into the mouth that is biting, people want to pull back. Pulling back is exactly how puppies play with each other. The mother dog corrects by pushing into the bite, she pounces and holds the pup still for a few seconds. You can push your hand in to the bite and say a very firm NO (you do not have to say no bite, no bark, no watever, just NO is very effective. No means No, stop it right now.) Younger puppies respond best to the cue word OUCHEEEEEEEEE, then stop playing at once. This tells the pup they are biting too hard and you will not play. It is best to teach your pup teeth are not allowed on people at all. Please search nipping for more detailed information. Hope this helps. |
She's adorable!!! We went through that nipping stage with Daisy too. The advice given here is great and I can't add anything. Enjoy her puppy days and know that with training she will grow out of it and be a great little addition to your family just like Daisy is. Have fun! |

Gracie was a chewer as a puppy also. Just don't let her chew on you. Get some bully sticks and have them handy. When she chews something she is not supposed to chew tell her "NO!" and give her the bully stick instead. Be consistent and she will get the idea eventually. |
Here is another neat trick I learned from Dogs 101 on Animal Planet lol.... get a frozen stick of butter and rub it on the back of your hand (has to be frozen so it doesnt melt) and when she tries to bite, tell her "NO", show her the back of your hand, and she will start licking it cuz of the butter hopefully, then praise her when she is just licking.....Unless you dont want your dog to be a licker hahaha Anyway, Good Luck! :) |
