i finally got a puppy!
 

After a recent dissapointment, my mom decided she needed to make sure I got the Yorkie I have been wanting for so long (and everyone else says I needed)

Anyway, I now have a 7 week old male named Duke. (He will be 8 weeks on Tuesday) I realize it is ideal for puppies to stay with their moms until they are 12 weeks, but it is a little late for that now... He is doing very well, and I am currently not working. This means I am home with him all the time to make sure he is ok.

When is it ok for me to give him a bath? What type of brush is best? What is the ideal shot schedule, and shots? (I am going to try and avoid non-core) i do know he got shots at 6 weeks, and weighed 1lb, 8oz.
Any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

Congradulations!! You will need to take your baby to the vet for a well check and to discuss the immunization schedule. Sense he is so tiny and not had all of his shots and the weather is getting cooler,you need to keep him away from other dogs unless they live in your home. The floor is a drafty place for tiny puppys so be sure to keep him warm. You can find "how toos" for tiny dog sweaters made out of socks on youtube. It is also very important the he eats several times a day so his blood sugar doesnt crash.
Look in the library here for how tos on bathing and grooming. I would wait a week or two before bathing,due to his age and the cool weather.
He is at an age where EVERYTHING is something to go in the mouth. Even a small piece of thread can harm him if he swallows it. My baby is 10 months old and I am still following her around saying "drop it".
When you start looking for a harness that fits you might try a ferret harness until he is a bit bigger. Collars can collapse his trachea. Mine wears a collar only to carry tags. Others put their dogs tags on the harness.
You might want to look into insurance and microchipping. These are things that you will want to read about and decide if it right for you and your baby.

Congratulations on your new little guy! I would make a vet appointment ASAP just to have hime looked at and to make sure everything is ok. He's very young and will need you to be very dilligent in making sure that he's eating enough. At 7-8 weeks his teeth are tiny and may not even be in yet, so I'd get him some canned food as kibble is going to be too hard for him to eat. Don't let him play for too long or too rough. He needs to sleep a lot, like a newborn. Watch for signs hypoglycemia and make sure that you have a tube of nutrical on hand in case you need it.

Other than that, enjoy him! They don't stay puppies for very long!:D

Congratulations, you might want to stack up on a good quality pate style dog food, puppy cal, in case his sugar goes low, and a buddy, puppies that young need a special buddy a stuff animal will do.. also a fleece blanket , they love the warm and fuzzy feeling of fleece..:D

Puppy needs a Mommy
 

Congratulations on your new Puppy. A Yorkie puppy should stay with his mother until he is about 12 weeks old. So you have a premature puppy in a way. You will have to be his mommy and teach him like she would.
1. Umbilical Tethering
Is a wonderful way to bond with your puppy and keep him safe. Hook a leash to his harness and put the other end on your wrist. He will feel secure, he can see you, smell you, and hear your heart beat and breathing. When he is not hooked to you he should be safe in his crate or play pen. You should resist the urge to carry your puppy around. This is a human instinct for human babies. Doggie babies need to walk and learn to follow the leader. Walking is much better for them, it makes their muscles strong and teaches them to look to you for directions. They learn by watching and doing what the leader does.
2. Potty Prep
The mother dog begins to push the puppies out of the nest area to potty at 4 weeks, at 6 weeks they follow her to the potty place and copy her behavior. So you have to pick a place and take your baby about every 2 hours during the day. They really do not know they can hold urine, when they feel the urge to pee they pee. When they are 8 to 10 weeks old, they begin to understand they can wait a few minutes, you can begin true potty training. Always praise if they potty in the right place. Potty breaks should be short. Say your cue word ' POTTY NOW' give him 3 to 5 minutes to potty. If he goes, praise 'Good Potty' pet and maybe reward with off the leash play time in a fenced yard. You are teaching him potty first, then sniff and play is ok.

LOL I don't mean to write my book here. But puppy training is my passion. Everything they learn the first 24 weeks of life forms their basic outlook on life. So it is so important to set up a good foundation of training and social behavior.

Thank you everyone. I have a vet appointment made already, i was just curious as to what your thought was on vaccines. We have a pee pad by the back door I have been taking him to. He went on his own twice tonight, and he was praised. I was so happy for him! I closely monitor his food intake, and watch for hypoglycemia. My mom has a chihuahua who has an on going issue with this, so I thankfully am prepared in that area.
