Needing advice on a new puppy... Hi everyone! I haven't introduced myself yet but I have a 9 month old male yorkie named Roscoe. Let me start out by saying he is my world! He is always with me and my husband and has always gotten our attention whether he wants it or not:D He is the most sweetest loving baby I have ever had the honor to know! I can't say enough amazing things about my sweet little guy, I just am madly in love with him! (what husband?:p) Anyways, so I really wanted him to have a playmate for life because no matter what kind of companion I am to him, I can't replace a dog campanion. We adopted a 12 week old female yesterday from the best breeder I ever come to know. It's only been one night so I am not worried about anything really but at first Roscoe seemed scared of her for a few hours. He is a very socialized dog, but only around kids, cats, and humans. He has only played with dogs on a couple of playdates that we set up at the dog beach. But nothing permanant you know just a few hours along the beach or at the dog park. Now he is acting like he is jealous of her. I am trying so hard to let him know that he is my baby and the love of my life and that it will never change. I have been trying to spoil him rotten. He is growling at her though especially when we are holding her. If I put her opn the ground though he barks and growls. I know it will take awhile, but I also don't want this to effect my bond with her. I am already in love with her too, but right now she is spending more time with my husband then with me because I feel like I am letting Roscoe down everytime I hold her and he sees me. What do I do so that we can all be one happy family? I just want my little guy to know he is everything to us and that will never change and that he is my best friend, but I do want to be able to have the same relationship with Sukie our new little girl too. My husband works a lot and her bonding to him more then me scares me because he is only home on the weekends and I am her main caregiver. I want her to love me and be my companion the same way Roscoe is yet I feel to bad being around her because of my little main squeze! Please help me!! |
Well just to add to this post, I just gave roscoe his bath and after grooming him and trying to get him dressed he started growling at me in a not so nice way. He has NEVER growled at me before:( |
Your just going to have to make sure you give Roscoe extra attention and give it time. He has had you to himself and needs to adjust that there is a new dog in the house. Give it a month and they will be getting along. It just takes some dogs longer than others to accept a new one |
I agree...He has been your baby all by himself for a long time now!! When we first introduced Bevo (who was 2 at the time) to Baby Mack Brown, He hated him!! Honestly, it took Bevo about 3-4 months to finally accept him...but now (Mack is 9 months old ), they LOVE each other. They play, cuddle, and get into trouble together!! Just be patient...but, be careful and don't let him hurt the new baby....Just show him you still love him.... I am going through it all over again right now as we have a new baby girl in our home (for the past 2 months already)...Bevo still wont even really look at her.....Mack on the other hand LOVES her...Just depends on the personality of the pup, and it sounds like Roscoe and Bevo are alot alike!!! |
Hi Nicole, Welcome to you and your furbabies! I hope Roscoe warms up to the new puppy real soon. |
hi I need help too. Has anyone here used Challenge International to transport puppies? I have a possible puppy in New York. I live in Tacoma Washington. Their web site in non-funtioning. The person in New York is claiming to have paid, and I would need to pay her back. Sounds very suspicious to me with no on-line payment via my credit card. Found the puppy listed on hoobly.com. Has anyone had any experience with them? Thank so very much. Sunday is my birthday, was trying to add a companion dog to my life, but, it just seems very strange. |
It just takes patience and time. You have a toddler and a baby. It will take some time to figure out that baby is not going away and that Roscoe needs to adjust and he may even figure out that the baby is fun to play with. |
You have gotten good advice from everyone. I would like to add do not let Roscoe bully the new pup or growl at you. Stop that right now. Say Enough in a firm tone and put him on the floor. He had no reason to growl before because he got everything he wanted. Now he has to share. Everyone in the family has to adjust. Just be aware of jelousy and aggression. Don't let it grow into a real problem. Don't feel guilty about the new baby. Once he accepts her, she will probably be his best playmate, and buddy. |
I just wanted to say Welcome! |
