Shipping yorkies Hey guys, I have been looking into getting another yorke for a while. I have found a gorgeous female but she is several states from us. she would have to be flown to us. I am a little leary about this. Who here has had experience with this? Was it traumatic for the dog? I have been so frustrated with trying to find one local. She's about 6 month old already. Thanks! |
There are some very reasonable air fares right now. Check in to how much it would be to fly you or the breeder with the puppy being flown INSIDE the plane seating area. I would never send a poor tiny yorkie puppy in cargo. I can't imagine how frightened they get during that ride. It is also starting to get very cold in most parts of the US, even colder up high! Please consider flying yourself, the breeder or using one of the pet escort services. There is one airline that caters to pets and has someone with them at all times. I cannot remember the name of it, but the list of airports it services is very small. |

would you be willing to fly to her? that way you can meet the breeder/puppies parents |
I regret having mine shipped to me all alone. It was a 5 hour flight, plus layover and however long it took to load him up, then take him out of the plane. He smelled like urine, covered in fleas, and was shaking terribly when I finally got him out of his carrier. The breeder said he was freshly bathed when he was sent to me. I can excuse the urine smell, he probably had to go while in there, but the fleas.... That was a surprise. It's a gamble. You don't know what you're getting into until the pup arrives. Mine was 12 months old when he flew to me, and I'm sure it was a very traumatic experience for him. I agree with the above poster, yorkies aren't a package that can be sent all willy nilly. |
Yes, I totally agree. If I do decide to purchase this pup, then I will either fly to get her or use a pet carrier service, (which will probably be too expensive). Thanks for the replies! |
Unless you can fly to pick her up and bring her on as a carry on I wouldn't do it. Most airlines I looked at wont fly live cargo from mid November until February or even April due to non heated cargo areas. |
Going to a completely new environment is an adjustment that is hard enough. Having to do so after a lonely, scary plane ride would make it much more difficult in my opinion. |
I drove from Long Island to the very farthest west point of West Virginia. The person we bought him from met us part way from Ohio so we didn't have to drive so far. Maybe this is an option. Good luck getting her. Please post pictures when you do. |
I'm sure there are plenty of pups available in your state. Why not start looking there? How did you find this breeder or did someone recommend her to you? Personally I would never have a pet shipped unless someone was with them the whole way in the cabin. Even then, I'm sure it'd be a very traumatic experience. |
Shipping Yorkies Please do not ship, DH worked for several different airlines over the years and even though MOST try to do well by the dogs, ITS AWFUL, traumatic isn't even close enough a word to cover the experience. :eek:The horror stories are awful, even inside the plane it's hard to fly. But then I personally hate to fly so may be I'm prejudiced. LOL :p And I can mostly understand what goes on. Good luck |
Fly out and get yorkie and fly home. Little yorkies shouldnt be in cargo it is too nmuch chance to take. What if they had hypoglycemic episode while in plane in cargo. Not to mention you should see where pup came from and meet breeder in persom |
I flew with my puppy last Christmas, she was five months at the time and it was not a pleasant experience for her whatsoever and that's that she was WITH me, not flying as cargo. It's definitely scary to them. I'm glad you've decided against flying her by herself  And I agree that there must be yorkies in your area. Hopefully you can find one closer to you. |
