Help! My little girl won't drink out of her bowl. I just picked up my 12 week old baby today. She is in a new house, and everything, I know she's going to take a while to adjust. But even encouraging her that it is okay to drink out that bowl is not working, but she will eat out of the matching food bowl. I don't understand? Does not compute. |
Good morning! Oh, they are fussy little things, aren't they? :) Do you think it's because he can see the bottom of the bowl through the water? We had this issue with Harry - he wouldn't drink out of a stainless steel bowl, I think he could sort of see himself in it! So we changed him to a china bowl and everything was fine! It was also heavier, as he didn't like it moving and splashing while he was drinking!! Sally + Harry x |
My first responce would be to call your breeder and ask her what to do. You might also try a different bowl! Make sure you give her some nutrical and then maybe some chicken broth to encourage her to drink. Congrats on your new baby! And good luck! I'm sure others will be around to give you their advice! |
Definitely check with the breeder. Your little one might be used to a water bottle. Mine will drink out of bowls too but they prefer the water bottle -- especially my little male Ben. He loves the water bottle! I have a wire crate set up mostly to hold his waterbottle but they do like to go in there and nap sometimes when I am not free to make a lap. :) I highly recommend a water bottle. If you don't have a wire crate to put it on the side of, there are plenty of stand aone water bottle holders you can buy too. They don't get their beards wet and they stay much fresher! |

Congratulations! Will she drink some water off of your fingers or from the palm of your hand? |
Your baby may have been taught to drink from a water bottle, I would call the breeder to find out. If not you could put some ice cubes in the bowl till he figures it out, they seem to love to lick ice cubes. |
You could try adding water to her food to make sure she's getting some additional liquid until you get her drinking water on her own. My vet had suggested that as a way to supplement water for my cat, and it works really well. I give her her dry food in one bowl, then a really watery slurry of canned food in another bowl. She drinks the water out of the canned food, and then leaves the rest. It's sort of wasteful of the canned food, but at least I know she's getting enough fluid in her diet. |
Hi, someone already suggested switching the bowl. Romeo would not drink water out of his stainless steel bowl so I switched to ceramic. Never had a problem after that. |
Thor strongly prefers heavy ceramic bowls. He doesn't like reflections, or bowls that move around while he uses them. |
She will drink water from my hand and such. But not much she had a stainless steel bowl at the breeders, but it was more of a dull stainless. I thought of roughing it up with steel wool so she can't see herself. Maybe that would help. She will drink out of this very small rubbermaid bowl we have, but it gets empty so fast. |
Mine like ceramic too Ive tried stainless and they didnt like them |

When mine were that young they drank from a water bottle. You might try that and just introduce the water bowl slowly. |
Sounds like a typical yorkie. Just keep trying something until you find one that works. Some do like a really small bowl. |
