I got a phone call early this morning from Violet's breeder.:D She informed me there has been a family emergency and that I can come pick her up!! (For reasons I can not discuss). I'm worried because she's still so young but excited at the same time! She's 9 wks old today!!

Any tips/ideas on where to start with potty training? I would like her to potty outside and to ring a bell hanging on the door to let us know she needs to go out, but would also like to pee pad train her so that when she's older and has free roam she can use the pad if we are not home.

Also when should I start working on the sit, down, stay commands?

This is not my first puppy but I want to train her right. Thanks for all your help!

Awwwww she is so cute. I think training can start right away. Patience and consistence is your best friend. I would take her out very often. When she does her duty praise praise and maybe a little treat. Same with the sit and lay down. Just don't do it to long they do better if you try go away from it and then try again. The bell I would just ring ever time you take her out. Soon she will get bell rings door opens. Good luck. One thing make sure she is eating and drinking most important thing when coming home..

:thumbup:Very Good Advice, the only thing I would add is Let her walk, With Yorkies and other small breeds we tend to carry them far too much. They need the exercise and to learn to walk with us. Put a soft harness on her and a leash and walk her to the preselected potty area. When I was first potty training the puppies, I actually marked the area with a pee pad. I tacked it down with landscape stakes, the U shaped ones (cheap at Lowes)

No advice but I want to tell you she is the cutest little girl. What a sweet dumpling.

aww, she is so cute!!! i recommend the washable peepads instead of the disposable kind. they are wonderful!!! i thought that it was best to wait until she has had all her puppy shots before she goes potty outside. i didnt have my Yorkie when she was a puppy but i had my 2 chihuahuas when they were very young ( younger than yours is right now , and i know that is not the best thing to take them away so young from their mothers, but these circumstances could not be helped )
anyways, i got an x pen. and set it up with the peepads on one side and there food water and bed on another side and thats how they learned to be pee pad trained.

Thanks everyone! She is settling in quite nicely! She has had a couple accidents but thats to be expected! She even perked up this evening and was playing with her tug rope with me! As I type she is sleeping on my lap <3 I forgot how much fun it is to have a puppy in the house.....and how much work it is! lol Just like having a new born! She will be going to her new vet tomorrow for her New puppy check up.

I also wanted to ask, what type of shampoo do you all use? For Bella I use baby shampoo with oatmeal in it (she has dry skin issues) and once in a while I will put some of my conditioner on her. But we are open to trying something New/better!

I use Isle of Dogs for grooming. I love it.

Also in terms of training, I can't offer potty training advice cause I indoor train with a toilet system, so I know nothing about outdoor stuff.

Make sure because she is so young that you don't expose her to other dogs until she's done all her required shots and the vets say she can go out, (I think it's the second set they're good after).

Also training has to start now if you want to do it "right" :P lol. But there really is no right way, as long as you're a positive trainer and know what your goals for your dog are.

The most important thing to teach your little one is the "drop it" and "ouch" command. Because she came home early, the "ouch" works well to teach bit inhibition. If her teeth come into contact with your skin, say "ouch" in a loud deep voice, then that startles them a little and they release, immediately replace whatever she had in her mouth (hands feet etc) with a toy or treat. So she learns its far more pleasant and fun to chew toys, not you.

Also drop it, teaches them to drop whatever's in their mouth with the pay off of getting something better. This helps when you want to teach fetch later too. It also helps teach "leave it"

To teach drop it, give her a toy, it works good on tugs, then when you want her to drop the toy, push the toy backwards towards her, this gentle motion encourages them to drop the toy, and the second you feel the pup release, praise and give a treat or a better toy. Don't make the same mistake I did, I stopped here, now harley has figured out that drop it only counts when I hold onto the toy, if I say it when I'm not touching it, he smiles and runs away :D.

I recommend getting a few good training books. I wasn't a big fan of clicker training when I started, then realized it was a necessity. I don't use a clicker, but I use a marker word. "My Smart Puppy" is a good book.

Couldn't you tell the breeder that you will take the mom and the babies and take care of them while they are gone? This way the babies can stay with the mom till they are at least 12 weeks, and you will have your baby at the same time. ;)

she's gorgeous. my only advice is socialize socialize socialize. even with all the work, wish i could have more. congrats, enjoy!!!!:love:
