When was your first grooming? Cody is stinking adorable, of course. But my husband pointed out the other day that he's looking pretty.... well.... shaggy. At first I resisted, but upon further inspection it does appear that he is a little raggamuffin. He's just 13 weeks old though and I don't want to scare him. But I also don't want him to look like a little unkempt monster! How old was your baby when they got their first grooming? |
I do not remember how old I was when I got my first hairvut. I would guess as soon as I could sit on the Barbers booster seat. |
Apparently I should restate.... How old was your *pup* when they got their first grooming? |
1 Attachment(s) My hubby was the one who pressed for a haircut for my boy too. Deuce was about 6 months when I officially had him groomed. I went with him and asked the groomer if I could watch so I could learn how to do it. She was great and really took the time to talk to me about what she was doing. Well I started to do it myself with the support of several folks on YT and a person I met through my local Yorkie Meetup group. Now I take him to the groomer to just get his nails cut and ear hair pulled out (I'm too chicken). I just don't want to leave him at a groomer and I actually find it relaxing to style his hair. (I'm a little strange huh?) Keep your in home brushing and combing a ritual just to get him used to it and if you are going to use a groomer he might as well get used to being handled by someone. I attached a collage of Deuce. I bet you can tell which picture was the one right after he was groomed at the salon. |
Abba was 12 weeks old and trimmed up. Ginny Joy was 13 or 14 weeks got a Gracie Ruth puppy cut. Gracie unknown was shaved when we got her as rescue. Rubin was about 6 months old just did a face trim his hair is very easy to keep tangel/ mat free. |
1 Attachment(s) I took my puppy Moxy this past weekend for her first grooming, and she is just shy of 5 months old. Though I really wanted to get it done a few weeks ago after she got her rabies shot, but I didn't get the chance to. I think she was around 3 months old when I had her nails trimmed at the vet the first time..I remember those were long overdue at the time! She definitely was my little scraggle-muffin before her grooming :D. |
I got Elvis when he was 2 1/2 he had just received his first pup cut. Scoobers was 5 months old when I got him (he's a Schnorkie) he got his first grooming right after his 1 year birthday. Princess Monster my miniature schnauzer was 9 weeks when she received her first schnauzer trim for the pre-adoption pics. So I cannot speak from experience with a Yorkie pup but I will give my opinion, 6 months, they should have seen the groomer at least once it's pat of training. Did you mean just a grooming or a hair cut? You are brushing at home right? Grooming should also consist of but not be limited to: nail trim anal gland cleaned teeth brushing bath drying brushing trimming or cut Hope that helped! :) |

I got my puppy groomed 3 times by the time he turned 16 weeks. Petsmart has a puppy groom, which is cheaper and is a bath, nail trim, and trim around the feet, face, and privates. It's best to groom them a lot when they are young, so that they get used to it and don't fight it as adults. |

I do think its important to touch them all over, especially their ears, feet, butt, teeth/mouth often from being a young puppy so they are used to being handled. It will make for easier grooming whether its you or someone else doing it. |
About 16 weeks. |
I introduced Abby to the scissor today. She is almost15 weeks. I showed her the scissor, let her smell it and rubbed it on her-then clip- clipped it around her face. just took a couple of little snips. Have been introducing the clippers so she can get used to the buzzing- haven't used them yet tho. |
guess around 6 months. |
With my babies i groom them until they no longer hate baths (when they arent trying to escape from the tub), and when they aren't afraid of the dryer. It took my first baby 6 months to get used to baths so she went to the groomers at 6 months. Max is 5 months and still is afraid of the dryer so he won't be going to the groomers until we get that under control. |
To answer some of your questions, yes... we do grooming activities at home on a regular basis. Cody gets brushed every single day. We also make sure to take time to handle his paws, ears, entire body, mouth, etc every day. He's really chill about being touched and handled. His only real objection is being rolled onto his back (not because he minds his belly being touched but because he likes to be in charge). He also had his first bath yesterday and did just fine with everything including the blow dry. He's a fairly mellow little dude. I was just wondering about taking him in to get a clip and trim and such. Sounds like he could be due for one whenever at this point. Thanks guys! |
