Well, I hate to add to that paranoid feeling, but dog thefts are on the rise, and Yorkies are one of the most popular breeds. If it's possible to get an alarm system, better safe than sorry! It makes me paranoid to take mine anywhere other than the groomers, I tell ya. There are many people out of work and desperate, and some won't hesitate to steal to get some money. It's sad that we have to be so security conscious these days *sigh*

You have to post some pics of your new baby when you get home:) Is that your baby in your avatar? That's one of the cutest pups ever:D!

I would definitely invest in an alarm system for you and your dog's safety. I've never experienced a break in, but my homes have always had alarm systems and I felt weird not having one at my last apartment. Even if they don't steal the puppy, they could let it out. :(

Ohhhh, I wish I didn't read this. I feel the same way about an alarm system. My boy likes to keep watch in the front window. That's like an invitation. I also wouldn't want him to be let out. Ughhhh!!!!

Wow I never thought about theft. We are fortunate to live in a gated community, but that doesn't guarantee total security. We have an alarm system, but again, nothing is fool proof. For us, working at home usually means one of us is here most of the time. But now I'm going to have to keep my eye out for mysterious people carrying empty leashes! ;)

I'm almost afraid to let TinkerBelle out for fear someone might see her and know she lives here, and possibly break in. We don't have an alarm, so I'm thankful to be home all day.

I guess they could still break in if they wanted. Lately there have been some people who have had their doors kicked in while they're home and robbed.

I couldn't bear to lose my baby, especially to some loser who would just turn around and sell her to who knows who.

I have an alarm system but Brandi has free run of the house. The good thing about Brandi is that she will not let strangers anywhere near her. It takes the police about 3-5 minutes to get to my house so there's a good chance the thief may not be able to steal her simply because they would have to chase her and with the alarming going off, chances are they won't waste the time. However for those that have friendly dogs and it takes the police around 5 minutes to get to your house, there's a good chance they can still be taken.

An alarm system will not stop a burglar from stealing your dog. The further you are away from the police, the longer it takes for them to arrive. Unfortunately there are no guarantees in life, but with that being said you should still try to enjoy your life to its fullest. The most any of us can do is try to keep life's dangers to a minimum.

If it helps alleviate some of your fears, you can also get a motion sensor video cameras with your alarm system, you may be able to identify the burglar in the event something does happen. It's so sad that we have to go through all of this to protect ourselfs and our loved ones.

I can't imagine living without an alarm system. I was at home one time when someone broke in. It's not a good feeling. Ever since then, I need that early warning so that I can better able to respond.

I am using the same advice i had for another reason to keep your baby safe,put her in a decent size crate with bed toys water etc and lock it,if you are that afraid I would buy a thick lock and key and lock the crate when you leave,it would buy you some time,they would have to have cutters of some sort on them when they broke in.;)

We have an alarm system complete with cameras, and I still worry about someone breaking in and stealing them. I take them to work with me if I have to go to the office, but I worry about those other times when we go eat, or to the store and they can't go.

We have learned with our business that they go for the easier places, so make it as hard as possible! In addition to our alarm and cameras, we have lexan plexiglass in our windows and door at our office, so that even if they do break the glass, they still have to get through the plexiglass (think bank style plastic, but on a thinner scale-its virtually indestructible, and by the time they actually got through it, we would be there with a shotgun. Our house is .02 miles from the office). I have my computer BOLTED to my desk, and every drawer in my office has a padlock and hasp. I am not taking any chances there-had it happen once and it was hell.

I want to add the plexiglass to the windows and french doors at home, but not sure how to on the windows and still be able to open them.

I worry about fires too. I have a sticker that says: DOGS LIVE HERE

We have thought about this too. When we moved into our house, we did everything we could do to make sure our pups are safe. We built a huge privacy fence in the backyard so people don't know we have yorkies, put in a security system and even have our property monitored by cameras. The security system automatically calls the police, text messages me and calls my dh if anything happens, so it would be difficult (though not impossible) for someone to steal our pups.

I think anyone who has had a break in is going to feel unsafe for a very long time. I think you would feel that way even without your puppy. For your own peace of mind you should probably invest in some sort of security for your home.

I don't worry too much about such things but I do try not to leave Gracie for long periods of time. I like to have her with me and she does not like to be alone. The last time I left her alone for several hours she was so upset when we got home that she started to do like a reverse sneeze and she had never done that before.

Couldn't they just take the crate? they're not going to worry about being gentle with your baby, they'll just be doing what will get them in and out the quickest.

OP I recommend going ahead with an alarm system, it'll give you piece of mind and should keep out most burglars. I'm glad I found an access controlled building, the front office will see anyone coming and going during the day and they don't leave until I get home at night. Plus Rizzo hates strangers so much he'll bark/scream/cry until they let him go.

I mean a big crate like 36 " or 42' big enough to be a comfortable place to spend time while your away,too big to just carry out. you lock the top to sides with one lock at each end and the door.. they cant carry it out.. too big and too much hassle to start trying to cut the locks:rolleyes:

More than a burglar, I am more worried about fires. I would definitely suggest you get an monitor alarm system just in case of fire. That is my biggest fear more than anything. I have a monitored system that calls out to the fire department as soon as the smoke detector goes off. I also have a sticker on my front and back storm doors alerting them that animals are inside.

A break-in is one of my worst fears. If you google "lost Yorkies" and read about Yorkies that are lost or about thieves breaking in homes and taking yorkies and how the owners are desparate to get them back, its just heart breaking. I don't know why I torture myself reading does Ads (:confused:)
Unfortunately, my babies would absolutely welcome any one that breaks into my house. I can see them now showering them with kisses ..ugh..:mad:

I think everyvody has the same fear. Our house has a alarms also but I still worry. Thank goodness most of our accessable entrys are behind our 7 foot privacy fence and the window that on in the front are night next to an ex cop who has a security camera and he constantly monitors the camera from his home. We also have 2 basset hounds who would rip someone's arm off if they tried to mess with babies.

I too have been through a break in and I know exactly how you are feeling. I got lucky, they left Rosie here. Thank God. Over reacting? Nope not at all. I insisted on a security system too. I am really glad that I did. I will tell you it is money well spent. The initial cost is pricey but the monthly fees really are not that bad. Do go with a reputable company. My mom and dad got the shaft from a well known security company. Because they don't do the monitoring. Instead they "sell it" to someone else. I would say go for it and get one. Peace of mind is worth a lot.

I think you would be surprised how they react. Rosie didn't warm up to them and they covered her up with my coat. I think she was "yapping" as them like crazy. I am just glad they didn't take her.

When I put my coat on, she attacks the sleeves! :eek: It was scary. Very scary. They left my back door wide open and she never left the house. I am so lucky to still have her.

Kaos and Rosie are a little more alike than I thought. Kaos got out of the yard as a baby and got more than two blocks away when a neighbor saw him and brought him home... before I even knew he was gone. It sounds like we were both VERY lucky. :thumbup:

Yes, we are! You are lucky he was returned. So many dishonest people might have kept him. :eek:

Oh I know I am so thankful every time I see them. They have a 3lb little girl, named Ginger, Kaos loves her so much if there front door is open, he runs upstairs in there home like he lives there! :eek: It was SO embarrassing the first time he did it. :p

I worry about this too! Luckily when I am at school, or my part time job, my mom is almost always home with ozzy. But I do worry about the times when I stay up late and ozzy has been laying on the couch while im doing things so I have to take him outside to pee and its late and dark out and when we just go out for short potty breaks he isnt on a leash because I just follow him and he is so scared of outside at night time he wont go anywhere that I am scared that someone could come into my yard and take him. Luckily theres always a neighbor outside when we go out and we have cameras out front, beside the house, the back yard, garage, facing the pool, and one in the house so I think we will be okay.

I often worry a little bit about someone stealing Kaos in the Subway's or in a big crowd in the City. My biggest worry is fires though! If I ever leave Kaos alone in my APT I generally go around unplugging everything. LOL.. I thought I was the only paranoid one. :)

Please be careful with those stickers they will also alert dishonest people to the fact that you have yorkies in your house. I used to have them in my front window and in the window of our 18 wheeler but realized I may just be inviting someone to steal them. So sad that something that is supposed to be good could also harm them.

Oh my gosh!! :eek::eek: I think I will have to figure out somewhere to post it that is not so obvious. Or I wonder if I tell our security company? They monitor for fire as well. Maybe they could put it on my account and tell the fire dept if anything ever happened. Going to take the sticker down!
