Up at 5 & 4 in the morning every night...

I love my baby and take the best care of him but for the past two months he starts barking 1-2 times during the night to either go to the bathroom or run into our bedroom to sleep with us. He has always been crate trained and has done perfect but now it feels like we have newborn with nightly feedings!

BoltonsMom 10-23-2011 02:13 AM

By the way, thank you all for giving me great advice. It's highly appreciated!

I still get up at any time between 1 to 3 am to let them out they can't hold it till I get up @ 5. Oh by the way my youngest is about 2 now. Just to let you know.:D

Is it worth putting his crate in your bedroom, so he can see you? :dogzzz:Is he pee pad trained? If so, is his crate big enough to accomodate his bed one end, and potty pads the other? Sorry about all the questions!! Sally + Harry x

:thumbup: Also, let him outside before you go to bed. I also agree that maybe you could put his crate in your room so that he can see you...

What happens if you don't let him out ? Does he potty in his crate ? I am thinking he just might be training you to get up because he would rather sleep in your bed.

I would definitely try moving the crate into the bedroom most of the time they just need to see someone so they know they arent alone.

I'm so sorry to hear you're having this problem with your little one. We always had this problem with our Lindi and I think she was afraid of the dark and would wake up scared. We have her right beside our bed now and leave our bedroom door open so she can find her way to her pee pad by the back hall. For the most part she sleeps through the night well now but will go out to use her pee pad if she really needs to during the night. This is rare though, and I'm pretty sure that the reason she would get up at night was more from fear than really having to potty.

Good luck and I hope that something someone says on here will help you out. :animal-pa

Our new puppy started in at 4 this am- my fault though, my daughter usually gives her a training lesson and snack before bed and she wasn't home. Guess I'll have to make sure she goes to bed with a little food.

I don't have any advice to give you on how to solve this. We had the same problem with Rhett. We caved and let him start sleeping with us and he's been sleeping through the night ever since.

MollysMammina 10-23-2011 09:47 AM

We put Molly's crate in our room at night and the first week she would wake in the middle of the night to go potty. She's 14 weeks and now sleeps through the night.

We had the same issue with Trixie the first few months she was home. She would wake at about 1 am and then around 5 am to potty. Her crate was in our bedroom and I would bring her downstairs to her xpen and she would potty on the peepad. Back in her crate, she used to sleep until around 7 am after her potty break, but if she came into our bed, she would sleep till I woke up.....hmmmmm.

Well, as she got a few months older, she didn't need her middle of the night potty time, but she would cry when I put her in her crate.

Okay, long story short....she now sleeps in our bed. But, I do get a better night's sleep and she goes to her potty pad by herself if she needs to now.

She trained me well

Tootsy has always slept in our bed. If she is hot she sleeps on top of the bed, but if she is cold or frightened, she sleeps in the bed. We don't mind at all - in fact we love having her with us. She lets us know when she needs to potty which is usually once during the night. She will give a low growl or soft bark and then we know she needs to go out. She is so quick about it, and back in bed as fast as possible. Their little bladders probably find it difficult to go through the night. I can't say it is a big problem for us. We feel so lucky to have this 'little treasure' that small sacrifices like getting up out of a warm bed once a night is a very small price to pay for all the happiness she has brought into our lives.

southernbelle04 10-23-2011 01:47 PM

We put Katie Scarlett's crate right next to our bed and it has worked wonders. She hasn't barked the first time at night since we brought her home. If she potty's during the night, she will whimper just a bit and I always wake right up. I change her pad, love on her for a bit, put her back in and say 'night night' and she goes back to sleep. So I was thinking too that maybe if you put the crate next to your bed that might help. I wish you luck!

BoltonsMom 10-23-2011 01:58 PM

Thanks for the information! Believe it or not Bolton actually does not like to sleep in our bed. if he naps in it he will wake up and go into his crate by himself. We just can't figure out why he keeps waking up, he has never done this before. Also, to answer a past question, he WILL NOT go potty in his crate and if he does he actually finds a way to push it out the side (i'm not kidding). Thanks again!
