Potty pad location? I am getting an enclosed soft-sided "pen" for my (soon to adopt) Yorkie furbaby which is about 4' in circular diameter. I planned on putting a small bed in there, bowls & potty pad. Do you think this will be okay for potty training (as opposed to placing the pad elsewhere in the house) for the initial training period? |
I think that is fine.... but you also might want to have one somewhere in the house. I know when I had Riley in his x-pen... I also had one in the corner of my place....and that one is still there. He really would not use the one in his x-pen and even in the middle of the night he would Whine and I would get up and take him to the one in the other part of the house...... When he got a little bigger, he would Whine and I would just lean over and unbolt the xpen and he would run to the other one, do his business and then run back into the x-pen where I would lean over and bolt him back in. That is how I trained him to use the pads First.... He will now use the pads, if he has to when I'm not home, but he will also go outside. Hope this helps! :) |
Believe it or not Lola has 3 pee pads she uses. One in her pen, one in the living room and one in my husbands "man room" When I am not home he locks himself in the man room with her and she goes there, when I am home she is usually in the living room with me and goes there, and at night/when we are at work she goes in her pen area. But...overall she prefers to go outside! So on any sunny day, warm or cold(with a sweater) we try to go outside as much as possible! And so far this has been working great for us :D |
I don't know what your set up is, but with Howie I just put one near the patio door and then gradually moved it outside the patio door. He'd then bark to go outside. This was on the advise of our vet and it worked great. He's now 8 months old and hasn't had an accident in the house in the last month & a half. Which ever route you go, the main thing is you need patience !!!! and lots of praise. Congratulations on the arrival of your new furbaby and don't forget to post some pictures. |
You need to have one inside the pen and at least one outside the pen in a location that is accessable to the pup. |
You're obviously going to get different opinions on this subject. I'm a one pad person myself. It's worked out great for us. I hope you find what works for you. :) |
when lola was in an ex pen i had a pad in there, i let one door open right into her crate and one was closed when i was not home. i learned she didnt like the pen much and would rather be gated in the kitchen area with a pad and not be in a pen. depends on teh pup and how long they are in there and how much free room they have. will your pup be in the pen when you are home, when you are not home? are they enclosed in the pen at night time? lola goes primarily outside but has two pads in the house for random pee pee breaks if she has to |
Once I tore Riley's xpen down I only have the one pad in.... I keep the bedroom door open in case he needs to use it in the middle of the night.... I have been meaning to put one in the corner of the bedroom, but just haven't. :) |
Our pee pee pad is in with our bedding area in the crate we purchased and have had no problems as of now. The bed is on one side and the pad is on the opposite. We've had our baby almost a week and she is learning very fast. She had 1 accident the past 2 days and no accidents today. She knows to walk right to her pad and go and then we give lots of praise. We tried treats, but she won't eat them. She'd rather have the praise I think. |
Thank you everyone for your feedback. It was very helpful. I was afraid it might be too confusing with a potty pad in her playpen, that it may be too close to sleeping & feeding areas but it does seem to have worked. She uses it a lot. She has had 2 "accidents". I did put another pad in our one bathroom but she has not chose to use it yet & that is okay. I show her & take her to it so she is aware that it is there. I had read that female Yorkies can be difficult to potty train & was really concerned about that but I am extremely pleased with how well puppy is doing. :) |
At night, Nino's potty pad and open crate are in the same enclosed area in my room. Seems convenient, right? Until he uses the potty pad. And then, he wants to be nowhere near it. He won't go back to sleep until I put a fresh pad down. :snore: I'm usually up 2-3 times a night because he cries. I guess I'm lucky his used pads hold no interest for him, but I'm so tired!! Thinking the pad needs to be more than 2 feet away from where he sleeps. His enclosed area is encroaching on MY area. :) |

I only have one Pad Area, and it's right in front of the Doggy Door that leads outside. The door is not open all the time, and both mine will bypass the Pad and go outside, when the Door is open. There have been some exceptions, when it's raining hard or very cold, they will use the Pad even if the Door is open. HA, they don't like to be cold or wet, but, they'll jump into the Bayou after a Frog with the temperature at 40°...go figure ! :rolleyes: |
