Worried! Too cold?! I haven't been here in a long time, but need some advice and am hoping someone will help :) I am worried it's too cold inside for my little yorkie/chi mix baby (Pixel) today! I haven't had the heat on in days and when I left the house it was 72 degrees, BUT I had no idea it wouldn't warm up and the temperature outside is now only 54. I would normally leave the heat on for him! He is inside and has 2 blankets in his little bed and 1 on the floor (in his big pen where he stays when I'm gone). It's on a tile floor, which seems colder. Will he be okay until I get home after work? I'm so worried about him being too cold!! He is only 5.5 pounds. I would run home during lunch, but live 40 minutes from work! Help! Thanks!:) |
Move up to Chicago! He should be fine. In the winter, we are at 70 during the day, and 66 at night and have never had a problem. You can always keep your thermastat set at a desired temp while you are gone. |
Thanks shodanusmc!! Hahaha I don't know about Pixel, but this Florida girl would DIE in Chicago ;) I normally would set the thermostat to where I want, but it's been so nice lately I've just had the whole thing off. I had no idea it was going to be so cold today!! I'm glad to know you think he'll be fine - I have been SO WORRIED!!! That little rascal is so spoiled and loved!! :) |
Have you thought about possibly putting a sweater on her while you are gone? That might help keep her warm. |
Sweaters. My babies wear them all the time in the winter months. |
2 Attachment(s) At night & when I'm gone, my heat is down at 58. I put a sweater on ZoE every morning before I leave. This is a photo of her today. I knit her 'stay at home sweaters' deliberately so they are a little tighter & don't have legs because I noticed that sometimes when she'd wear a sweatshirt/hoodie, she would get her paw caught up in the armhole area. That could be dangerous if that happen while I was gone & she tried to jump and landed wrong. This way, her core is kept a lil bit warmer. She also has a den that she snuggles in that blocks any drafts. Before I had this I would leave her crate out with a blanket thrown over it that covered the top & 3 sides. Maybe you could try that. |
I never turn on the heat untill it gets down to 40 degrees |
Oh, your dog will be fine. He will coil up and nest if he get cool but in an insulated house your dog won't suffer any ill effects from outside temps that warm. |
I wont be coverting my home to heat until at least November. I hate a hot house. I love my central AC. Right now it's 65 degrees in my home and my dogs are fine. I have one yorkie who weighs abou 6 1/2 lbs. The rest are a little bigger but they all have one thing in common, they hate the heat. |
I hate a hot house as well. I dress warmly and put a sweater on Tibbe before I will turn on the central heat the first time. It has to be forecast to go down to at least 43 at night before I will turn it on the first time. |
Thanks everyone!! I feel soooo much better that he will survive the day! :D I don't normally put a sweater or jacket on him unless I am home with him, because he has often had issues where his leg got stuck or it got twisted around, etc. and I worry leaving him in one. That's why I USUALLY leave the heat on for him. I was just totally unaware it would be this cold today!! Thanks for all the tips and for letting me know he should be fine. WHEW!! I knew good ole' Yorkie Talk would help me out!! Thanks everyone!! |

Those are cute pix!!! I didn't see ones of Pixel - did I miss those? |
1 Attachment(s) yorkietalkjilly - I didn't post any of Pixel. I just have the ones in my profile album from a couple of years ago. Here's a newer one though :) Attachment 355197 |
