Top Knots? Brushing? Hey guys! Question for you...how long did it take you to get your Yorkie acclimated to grooming. Katie Scarlett is doing pretty good. I usually try to do it after play when she is tired, but there are a few times when she just wiggles and wiggles. I try to keep going, although very slowly and talking sweet to her. Even giving her something to chew on has helped. She usually just will sit there and let me finish after putting up a tiny fuss. Will she always fuss like this or will she get used to it? Any tips? Also, when should I start working on the top knot? She has enough hair for a teeny top knot now and I thought about maybe just getting little clips in the baby department to get her used to it. Any advice? Thanks guys! :) |
IMO, the earlier you start with the topknot the sooner they become used to it being there. By 10 weeks old, I had ZoE in a topknot. It was a pathetic looking thing. A small band (left over from when my kids had braces..lol) that held just a few hairs on the top of her head. It was just a lil fountain. But, everytime I put it in I told her what a pretty girl she is. Now she's 10 months old and each morning after breakfast, she jumps up onto the chaise lounge and expects to be groomed & have her topknot put it ....and of course..told how pretty she is. Then she jumps down, gets the morning zoomies and runs like a crazy dog through the house :) |

So no clips....gotcha. What type of band do I use? |
The little tiny bands that they sell in the little girls section at walmart works great. Plus it doesn't pull out their hair when taking it out. It's the ones that come in like a 150 pack. Different colors in a container with separators. :) Have fun! ;) |
I think she will get used to it if it is part of her routine. My girls know they are brushed every morning and every night. They just expect it. Rosie does well with the hair bows. Again, I think she is just used to it. Mikki is trying hard to adjust. I don't think her former owner put bows in. So, we will continue to work on it. The more she is exposed to it the easier it will be! I never had luck using the bands. My groomer has made me tiny bows where she used velcro. You might look into that as well. I think there are some in the baby sections. I don't think it would be a choke hazard. What do the rest of you think? |
Ebay is a great place to buy dog grooming bands. I just got 1000 for 10.00. Ajother good thing to get their are dog grooming bows; there is a package of ;lots of them in all colors and they are small and not weighty and make good first bows |
I also got Taycie the little girls bands from Walmart in the Little girl section. I have a small cosmetic bag that I keep her little grooming things handy.. It has her toothbrush and toothpaste in it as well. I just started with rubberbands first and then worked up to bows. I like the bows with the alligator clips with teeth.. they stay in great. For night time, I use the little soft bands you can also find in the girl section. I remember them from when I was little. Goodie is the brand I buy. I like these at night because they are soft and using a rubberband all the time, can lead to hair breakage and a bald dog. You really won't have to worry about those bands until the hair is longer though. I just took her ponytail out at night when she was little. |
I take Bella's topknot down at night because I know how MY head feels after wearing a ponytail all day so I figure what's good for me is good for her. The other thing I'd suggest is getting her used to the nails being trimmed; even if it's just a miniscule piece you clip, doing it once a week or so will keep her from being afraid of them. (WISH I'd taken this seriously when I got Tuffy, he hates the nail clippers now :( ) The same with the electric trimmer...try using the opposite end letting it touch her but not actually cutting anything. |
Hey SouthernBelle! If you are looking for some great bows go to www.bowbizdogbows.com super, duper site with lots of beautiful bows! They sell tiny bands too! Go check them out! This gal is super nice and very professional! |
Thanks everyone for all of your help! I really appreciate it! I need to get some clippers and start trimming her nails a wee bit. I'm going to get the vet to show me how to do it tomorrow at her appointment. Also, it's not a trimmer, but I use a ladies electric shaver on my legs. I had it out yesterday and she came over to investigate. I thought the sound of it sounded exactly like the sound of clippers so I let her sniff the opposite end of it and check it out. I'm going to do that often to get her used to the noise. I'm terrified of nail clipping, but I know I can do it. I just need someone to show me how first. We are going to try our first top knot this weekend I think. I hope it goes well. :) |
