Advice for mom getting my first Yorkie Hi, I am new here & happy to have found you. I have had 3 Shih Tzu. One has passed & my other two are 10 y/o (11# female we rescued at age 3) & 12 y/o (a big boy at 20#). I have never had a Yorkie. I should be picking up our new furbaby on Friday. She will be almost 12 weeks old. Her parents are 4.5# & 5#. It has been many years since having a baby & I would appreciate any advice you can give me & any advice that may apply to a Yorkie in particular. Are there any items that you have found that were extremely helpful with raising a Yorkie? What about diet/food?? How should I go about introducing the puppy to my two older Shih Tzu? Are there any Yorkie books that you feel are particularly helpful? I found 3 at Pet Smart on the breed. Sorry, I have so many questions. |
When we bought home our first yorkie(2 yrs ago) we weren't sure how the big dog ( 11yo-35lb) would react so we blocked off the dining room to keep Ziva in. She spent way longer in there than we expected, altho the big dog did mostly ignore her. We all had to get used to such a small puppy. We just got another puppy and invested in an expen to keep her "safe". Tonite Abby was getting the big dog to chase her:eek: and ran to her expen for safety! |

Teresa is giving you good advice. Reading up on training methods is important. I know a lot of new ideas are out there and while I don't agree with all of them I do agree that proper training is of the utmost importance. I think Yorkies tend to be very fearless for the most part. In particular they tend not to be afraid of other dogs. Your older dogs should be introduced to the puppy. Watch their reaction. They will tell you just how much of this young one they want to endure. Your young one is going to have a lot more energy than the older ones and may require more exercise to run off the energy. I've found that I get a lot more exercise since having Gracie. My Shih Tzu was 15 when he passed on so I was not used to such a high energy level. I am not familiar with the book Teresa spoke of but I know she is good at training smaller dogs and smaller dogs tend to have a set of issues all there own in some cases. And good afternoon from the UK, too!!! :wavey: I must admit, I was nervous too when we got Harry - apart from a Schnauzer, we'd always had 'bigger' dogs. Well, personality-wise, you certainly can't get bigger than a Yorkie!! :) I would suggest you invest in a really good pair of walking shoes, as I've never known such bundles of energy!! Go to the top of the forums, and read all the "sticky" notes. There is a wealth of information that has been posted by all these knowledgeable YT'ers. Use the search method to look up specific questions, such as best foods, etc. More than likely you will find allot of your questions may have been addressed before. Spend some good hours here reading as much as you can.. and ask questions. There are sure to be good answers for you. Most of all enjoy! Welcome to YT! |
Definitely look into taking puppy socialization and training classes. My little girl was so afraid of her own shadow. After taking the classes she no longer screams when people come to the door or she sees men. I teach preschool and I now take her to work with me everyday and she is great with the little ones. Before the classes I wondered what I had gotten myself into, but now even my husband loves her! |
It's been 17yrs since we've had a puppy in the house... My girls were 2-1/2 when I got them... so I'm sorry to say I have no answers to your questions. But I wanted to say WELCOME. There are lots of nice, knowledgeable people here and the site is a wealth of information (as stated previously, the YT search on the bottom of the page is great for searching specific info). It really makes you feel as though you can ask any questions & receive a kind reply. :) I am still finding my way around the site but I have read a lot of the sticky notes (I should have read them before I posted but I am so anxious & a bit unfamiliar to the site yet ;)). I will use your search engine here too. That's a great suggestion! I do plan to take our new addition to puppy classes. I have done that with two of mine & I think it is very important & helpful. I will certainly post pics as soon as I get her. I have been so busy shopping for her-oh my-what fun! :D |
