Food Question?? Origen or Now? Ok , so I went to the store today to get Foxy's usual food. Dick Van Patten's Natural Balance, well the lady gave me two free samples , one was Orijen and the other was something I had never heard of called Now grain free dog food. Has anyone had any experience with either of these foods? I know the Orijen is bigger pieces, and I am a bit worried about that, but was just curious. I have thought about changing Foxy's food for a while now, but just havent been sure what to change it to..Any ideas? Thanks! |

Riley was on the Orijen puppy and it was a little too Rich for him. I tried him on the Now! and he wanted absolutely "Nothing" to do with it!! I then switched him to Acana..... I was finding on the Acana, that although it is a High Calorie food, Riley was always hungry. I just made the switch to Taste of the Wild and he is LOVING It!! It has less Calories, less Protein and Less Fat than the Acana. Hope This Helps! :) Here is my Thread on the TOTW: http://www.yorkietalk.com/forums/yor...wild-totw.html |
I can't speak to the puppy food because we are picking up our boy tomorrow, but I can tell you we are hoping to transition him over to Orijen. Both of my cats are on the Orijen cat formula and I can tell you it's amazing for them. Both are resuces but my oldest was an adult when I got her. Her coat was really thin and scratchy when she first came home with me. Just from eating Orijen, her coat is now all plush and shiny. I have never been able to brush her... she just doesn't care for it. So it's all the food. Anyway, that might not even be helpful. But I do love Orijen and I'm hoping Cody will love it too. |
Thank you both so much for your responses! They are most helpful, I tell you finding the perfect food for our babies in an ordeal to say the least! lol..Thanks again! |
My girls LOVE Orijen, problem is one has just been diagnosed with Addisons Disease and her vet told me to get her off that food immediately or I would destroy her kidneys, it has way to much protien.....Sad thing to because it is the only dog food they like |
My boy used to be on NOW! and I think it's a really good food. He can't be on it anymore because of his IBS, but I'm hoping to eventually be able to put him back on it in a year or so when he settles down. Also be careful, NOW! is grainfree, and when I started I really pushed the Grain free food, but some dogs need grains. If that's the case I recommend the Go! by the same company, Correct me if I'm wrong is Orijen the one that is 40% protein? If so just make sure your individual baby can handle that much protein. If I'm confused with the brands ignore that comment. |
Thanks everyone! Food is so crazy to figure out. Is there a different food with grains that is lower in protein but just as good? I only want the best for Foxy. Thanks! |
Is there a reason you want/need to change off of Natural Balance? Just curious, did not know if there was something causing you to want to change. I have been feeding NB Lamb & Rice for... about a week now? Jackson seems to really love it and has been doing well thus far, and hopefully this will be our winner food. I liked Castor & Pollux a lot (they have Organix and Ultramix line) and Jackson loved the taste too. Eye boogers seem to be more runny and frequent on the Organix adult though, that's when we decided to try something new. I really prefer Acana over Orijen -- I think both (both made by Champion) are fantastic foods but the Orijen tends to be too rich for some dogs. Have you checked out Acana? There is really no "set" protein/fat amount a dog should be eating. Every dog is difference depending on genetics, activity, health, age, etc, etc. |
Natural Balance is an Awesome food! I know several people who feed it to their pups with no problems. I don't have a whole lot of experience with the foods with grains..... I only feed Grain Free. I can tell you that TOTW only has 25% Protein and 15% Fat...which is lower than a lot of the grain free and Riley has been going bananas over it every meal. |

My main reason was the eye "boogers", they seem to be so much more frequent these days. Maybe she has allergies otherwise though, and its not the food. Shes been on Natural Balance a few months now, and no issues other than those gross runny eyes.. |

How big are the pieces of food? Are they pretty big? |

They will send you samples of their formulas, if you go to their website and request some. I requested some of the Pacific Stream and Sierra Mountain. Those are the two formulas that have the 25% protein and 15% fat. Taste of the Wild : Home Also, for eyes.... a co-worker here, who has a Maltese, told me to use Aquafina bottled water. I have been using it for Riley and he has hardly any eye boogers...or tears... Not sure if it is cause of the food or the water though. :) |

Ok great, thanks! I probably should use the bottled water for Foxy, we do have well water so I am sure that does not help. Thanks again!:) |
