Hi..Newbie here. Anyone else's Yorkie have resp. probs like.... ...my Scrappy? When he's very excited like at food time his breathing becomes very labored. Sounds like he's gasping for breath. It's very loud and alarming. All my husband has to do is shout at him and grab him, then it goes away. When he's playing outside and running wildly there's no sign of it. Don't know if a vet visit is warranted. |
Welcome to YT. I am sure others will have info to help. |
Hi! I'm a newbie here too, as a matter of fact, this is my first post! :) I got my precious Yorkie, Chewie, one month ago yesterday and he does this too. He's a year old. It didn't take long for me to figure out when he does this that it scares him and he learned quickly to run to me for security. It passes quickly and I stroke him, (I read to stroke them on their throat gently). It never lasts more than a few seconds. He really responds to my concern, it seems to calm him down. This is usually triggered when he gets really excited. I wouldn't yell at him when it happens though, because I can tell you for certain that it frightens them already and I don't think you want to frighten him more than he already is. Research revealed that it could be a reverse sneeze or a trachea that collapses or partially collapses. Google both of those terms and I think you'll identify with what is happening. Hope that helps a little! Nice to meet you! |
Welcome! There are several threads on "reverse sneeze" very common in toy dogs and "collapsed trachea" mostly common if a collar has been used to walk a toy dog and the dog pulls on the leash. Always use a harness There are also some videos posted, maybe in the library, of examples of RS,CT as well as Kennel Cough. Instead of yelling at the dog,say something calmly, stroke the dogs neck very gently or even sometimes touching the dogs nose can help. |
:welcome4: :yorkietal :welcome4: Although I am not a vet, what you have described sounds like reverse sneezing - be sure to mention it to your vet the next time you have Scrappy in for a visit. If you do a search for reverse sneezing, you can find youtube videos which shows a dog during an episode. If your Scrappy is doing something different, then please, by all means make an appointment to see his vet. |
How old is your pup? I would try videoing it w your cell phone when it happens and then make an appt to take him in to the vet. This could be something harmless like reverse sneezing or more concerning like collapsed trachea or kennel cough. These can be hard to differentiate. If he has an episode that lasts, you need to take him immediately to the vet. Also, check his gums. If the gums are turning blue, he is not getting oxygen and needs to get to a vet ASAP. Collapsed trachea can be something that they live with all their life that you just have to be careful with or it can be a more serious case of it and require surgery. A vet really needs to evaluate. |
I'm newer to the world of Yorkies to and can't offer any advice, but I wanted to say Welcome! I know you'll find a lot of help on here! Everyone is great! |
Hi and welcome to yorkietalk! i have 6 yorkies, which i breed and raise. Not that I am an expert, far from it, but my furbabies sometimes honk like Felix Unger from the Odd Couple! As soon as it comes, it also goes, by itself. But I do use harnesses and not collars, watch for chafing under their arms (front legs??) and enjoy your new dog. Mazal tov!! |
Thanks to everyone for their input. |
