yorkies and house plants I have a great deal of house plants in my den. I am concerned are yorkie puppies prone to mess with them . I know some house plants are poison and deadly to animals. How can I safe guard my little fellow when I get him? I have so many house plants and some are large so putting them high on a stand is not an option. Would bitter apple be a preventive measure? |
Honestly I have 2 yorkies and have never had a problem with them bothering them but have with the cats when they were young. I just put them all in my spare bedroom and kept them untill the cats were older and left them alone. The one you really have to watch out for is the sagio palm if you have that one. It drop little seeds plus the leaves are poisonous. We did have a member on here thats yorkie died because it had gotten in to a sagio palm she had planted in her back yard. Ive had a sagio palm in a pot however and my yorkies have never messed with it |
Philodendron is a common, highly toxic and not worth the risk, if you have one of those. Bitter apple is not an effective deterrent for plants and would probably damage the plant. I had tons of houseplants when I brought Max home and I decided that he was more important than my plants. Some of the plants were re-homed, some went to rooms that he does not have access to, and the safe ones were left. ETA: flowering plants are almost always toxic to dogs |
Watch out for crotons, too. They can make your little one VERY sick. |
When I brought Romeo home I had to re-home all my plants. One-by-one I reintroduced the plants as he got older and stopped chewing. It's been over a year now and I am proud to say that Romeo never goes anywhere near the house plants (he's not even curious enough to sniff them). On another note he is never alone so there's no chance he will get into mischief with my plants. |
my little pixie had an incident with a small bonsai tree... (i am not sure of the specific kind it was as there are several different types) she coexisted with it for months, but one day out of the blue she decided it looked yummy. i was out of the house to run in the grocery store for a couple items, was only gone 15 minutes and returned to pixie sitting on the coffee table next to the tree chewed to peices. i grabbed pixie and the tree and rushed to the vet. turns out it was not toxic, she was completely fine but it did result in getting rid of the plant (which was probably going to die anyway after being chewed up lol) and rehoming all of my plants that could not be elevated where she could not get to. |
Sorry I aggree that puppies and house plants are not a safe mix. I live in Fl. so I have plants on the screen porch and outside. I just use fake silk ones in the house or hanging. When I only had adult dogs I did have a few potted plants. Maybe you can do what Kristen did (Maximo) I liked her answer. Better Safe, than worried and in doubt. |
