Oh, what to do, what to do?! We innocently walked into Petsmart today with no idea there was an adoption event going on! Well, I made the mistake of walking past it and fell in love with this 5 month old black lab named Jake. We walked him around the store for forever and he was the sweetest, calmest lab I had ever seen. When I spoke with the rescue, they said Jake was that calm even in his foster home. You should have seen how nicely he went back into his crate, too! I’m going to sleep on it, but I really think he wanted to come home with me! Are three dogs and four cats a crazy number?

Oh, and the rescue lady said they had 35 yorkies coming in from a puppy mill that closed down in Kentucky. She said they were just beginning to arrive here in Illinois and they all had to be vetted and evaluated, but they would be available for adoption soon. I told her I would post on YT when they all started coming in, but here is their website: Welcome to Tails | TAILS Humane Society: Serving the community of Dekalb Ilinois One of the cool things they do is require a $75 training deposit in addition to their adoption fee. You’ve then got 6 months to provide proof your dog has received basic obedience training. The woman said they found this really cut down on the number of dogs brought back to the rescue. I certainly think it’s a brilliant idea.

My heart totally melted for Jake, though... And I know black dogs and cats, especially large black dogs, have a hard time getting adopted. What's a girl to do???

Oh my....now that is really a tuff one. What a hard decision to make.

How would you little ones do with a large dog. More importantly, did she say how Jake does around little one? :rolleyes:

That's the worst part! Not only did the rescue lady say he was fostered with tinies, but cats, as well, and he was fine! AND my little ones (Mojo in particular) seem to prefer big dogs. My oldest sister has a black lab and a golden retriever and my other sister has a large yellow lab mix. They all get along great! Also, the rescue requires a meet and greet before they'll allow an adoption to proceed, so my pups would have to meet Jake first.

I told myself I would sleep on this... oh decisions, decisions...

Oh geez...I don't envy you one bit. Yes, definitely sleep on it and she how you feel in the morning. Good luck with your decision....I'm sure you will do what is right for you and your family.

If he is great with cats and little ones then I think you have answered your own question. lol!!!! Go get him.

Kacee likes a black lab down the road. They always have to meet and greet. It's really cute.:p

I believe everything happens for a reason. Maybe you were meant to go there today?

I say GO FOR IT!!! Labs are such great dogs, and if he gets along with your others and you can afford another, just do it. And bless you for rescuing a sweetheart like that. I bet he'll bring so much love and joy to your life. Good luck! :)

I'm still torn, so I think I'm going to wait...

Will the lab be an outside dog or inside dog? I have a large outside dog that is so good to my yorkies. I can't ever just leave them. I end up bringing them home. Mine was in the humane society and I went to get a small dog. He was on "death row" so I had to bring him home. They kept telling me that large dogs are hard to get rid of. I want you to know he has been a great pet. He is wonderful to my kids and my Yorkies.

He'd be an inside dog. The rescue he's at is no-kill, so at least I know he'll not be euthanized. I think he would have come home with me last night if that was the case! Adopting a new pet is kinda like contemplating adopting a new skin kid to me. It is a huge commitment. I definitely want to give this some serious thought as I previously thought our family was complete.

And there is nothing wrong with thinking it through. When I decided to start looking for a 2nd yorkie I had to make sure that I was ready. Then I decided I was, and then I decided to wait, and then Mikki just happened to be at the right place during the right time. And here is my new addition. Lol. Be smart about it and if you are ready, follow your heart. It will guide you to the right decision. Good luck and keep us updated!

we have 5 labs :eek: and 1 yorkie. only 1 lab is in the house with Maddie, but all of them are really good around her. Our labs are all pretty calm, So i think it depends on the dogs. Maddie is the ruler of the house now and they all know if she barks they better move, lol. Good Luck!

We have 5 cats and 2 dogs and no I dont find 7 to be a crazy number. Now I know Im at my limit and I wouldnt take any more on but my house isnt crazy with that number of animals. If you really loved him I would get him

Labs are such sweet natured loving dogs, my freinds black lab went to heaven just a short time ago, he was 13 and her yorkie is heart broken.
they were besties, she is looking now for a new companion for him.

My 17 year old son volunteers for a rescue that does their adoptions at Petsmart, they are rescued from high kill shelters. Most of the dogs are small to medium size. I go up there every weekend and want to bring at least one dog home, but fortunately I know my limits with 4 Yorkies and 3 cats. Good Luck with your decision, there are so many animals that need homes. There was a huge adoption weekend at our county shelter. they use to average 25 animals a day needing homes now it is 50 a day. Mostly because of the economy.

OMG, I just went on their site and his listing is no longer there. :( I had e-mailed the rescue lady this morning with a few questions, but haven't received a reply, though I'm sure she's super busy. Wow, if he was adopted today, they are very quick in updating their website. Luckily, they are open 7 days a week, so I can call in the morning to see if he's still available.

We were at a family event most of the day so we haven't been home all day. I am so sad thinking someone else got him. Maybe it's a sign it wasn't meant to be, but if he's still there in the morning, I'm going to get him!

OMG, I am so sad just thinking about him... I was already wondering how I could con/bribe/cajole Lady Jane into making a Cloud 9 bed big enough for him... :(

Don't get me wrong, if he found a loving home, that is wonderful. I just love him. I guess I have my answer that I really do want him. I'll update tomorrow as soon as I know if he's still available.

Awww, we will keep our fingers crossed it works out for you. Just think of it this way, if it is meant to be then it will work out. I know how you feel. Went through the same thing with a rescue I found. I just knew she was the one. When I went to fill out app to get her, I found out she didn't get along with other dogs. Well, since Rosie was already with me I just could not get her. Anyway, I thought it wasn't meant to be. Then Mikki came along. So even if this one don't work out keep your chin up. The right one might end up coming along.
