What kind of clippers? Plucking ear hair? I was wondering if you all could give me some advice. Gypsy is very well behaved while being brushed and bathed so I was thinking I would like to try grooming her myself. A lady I met at the dog show here said that she uses a men's mustache/beard trimmer for her yorkies. She says they're nice and small and work really well for feet and behinds. Does anyone here use them? Would they be easy and safe to use or would I have to worry about pinching or cutting her? That's my biggest fear. I'm going to try growing her out to a full coat (her coat is beautifully silky) so there wouldn't be a huge amount of clipping to do. The otherr question is about the ear hair. The vet told me that it should be kept clear but she said it's a horrible job so they usually let the groomers do it. Is it really hard to do? Does it hurt them? Can you use an eyebrow tweasers to grip the hair? As you can see I'm a total newbie at this and will be really grateful for any and all advice. Thanks everyone :) Kathy |
I think a mens clipper is fine to use. Well let me put it this way, I haven't had a problem with it on my dog. He hates getting his butt shaved but who wouldn't? I don't pluck his ears (never have, it seems so painful) but I do use the shaver to trim the hair very short on his ears and this men's clipper has worked fine. Good luck! |

Even though it's a pain in the butt, the hair in the ears needs to be plucked. If left unattended, they can cause an ear infection and that's even worse. My Yorkie hates to have it done, so I will only do it for a couple of minutes at a time. You can purchase an ear power which helps you to grab the hair more easily- you just sprinkle some on, grab a buch of hair and pull it out fast. I tried the tweezer but accidentally nipped him because he was moving so I stopped doing that. If it seems like too much trouble have a groomer or the vet do it for you. Good thing about this is that you don't have to it every week ;) |
You can do your dogs ears. And -- it's true - they don't like it. But if you do it every once in a while - it's not bad - for either one of you. I think the secrets are to get some of that powder or something that can give you a better grip on the hair (it just slides right through my fingers otherwise). Secondly - pull very quickly. It's like pulling a bandage off. It hurts more if you do it slowly. And, doesn't hurt much if you do it quickly. Ears and clipping nails are easy to do at home - the more you do them, the better you get at it. If your groomer does it - great! But otherwise, learn to do it yourself. It doesn't take much time.
