Need Advice - Meeting New Little One I was almost afraid to post, as I am very supersitious and hate to "jinx" anything, but I am SO nervous. DH and I are going to see prospective little girl tomorrow at our breeder's house. She is a year old, so she is a little over a year younger than Gidget. Breeder thinks she will be a good match. We feel like parents waiting on a pending adoption - AAHHHHH! Is there anything special we should ask or do? Anything special we should be looking for as a second dog we are bringing into the home? We have never done this before so are "multiple pup virgins" and are very appreciative of any advice you all have to give! So many of you have multiples and do such a great job w your little ones, we're hoping you can guide us through this. |
Yup, I have some advice. GO GET HER, GO GET HER, GO GET HER!!! Don't overthink it or you would never get a second. If the girls hate each other, chalk it up to sibling rivalry. It should work out in time. If not, it's not the end of the world. The kind of contract you want is really up to you (congenital issues being covered, etc.). |

If she's already a year old, I would ask about her current routine, food, treats, toys, (and of course medical) etc. Consider how you will feed two vs one (each have their own bowl, etc.) Our experience tells me she should fit well into your routine and how you do things if you are consistent from the time you bring her home. Too, it's good we have two hands... they can both get scratched/pet at the same time ;) I agree with not overthinking it... you'll know if it's meant to be :) |
You taking Gidget with you to visit?. I think I would ask to. Just to see what she thinks. And then if they get along okay. Bring her home and post pictures. How exciting I am happy for you... |
Thats awesome...i also have jumped in feet first and have two baby girl littermates. We are separating them some now because they are babies and are bonding too much with each other and not as much with us as we would like. You shouldnt have that issue however I would give the new one special time with you away from the otber to create a good bond to you without neglecting the other sweetheart. Congrats. I like the advice of not overthinking it. It will all work out.:) |

I would ask to bring your dog along to see how they interact , I know I have a female and she simply does not like other female dogs at all... Hope all works out and you get to bring her home!! cant wait to see pics! |
Bringing your dog to see how they interact is not exactly how it will be at your home. Your dog will be more shy at someone's else's house and that one would be more outgoing, but will be just the opposite - most likely - when you bring the new one home. It will take about a month to adjust - the both of them. Just be patient. Best to bring her blanket or favorite toy she had at her old home to make her feel more comfortable and willa dkust better. Thanks for the advice and support! :) We are so nervous! And yes, you guys are right, we are probably really over-thinking this! We asked about bringing Gidget, and she would like us to meet her first to see if our personalities fit before introducing Gidget. She is not far from us, so this method will work for us. Topknot also brought up a good point about how their personalities would differ being in different homes. Do you recommend meeting on neutral ground somewhere instead? Or in our home? We go this afternoon, so I will let you all know how we made out. Thanks guys! |
