cotton coats and runny eyes. so i am fairly convinced Maci is a cotton body/legs with a silky head/face[picture 3]. her belly mattes pretty easily, although her body/legs do not. She grows a very pretty straight long coat, but while her coat is short it's wavy. [as pictures 1-2 show] my question on this is, are there any good products that other cotton coated yorkie owners use that will help keep the coat shiney and a li'l less prone to mattes? now, her eyes. her eyes seem to "leak" a lot. i cleaned "boogies" out yesterday. then cleaned a little boogie out today. the fur close to the inside of her eye was wet too. her skin is also flakey/itchy which i'm thinking is the RCYT28 food. my question here is, i am going to switch her over to Acanad Grass/Ranch , see what happens for her skin and eyes. In the meantime, what can I use to "soothe" her itchies?? |
I don't have a specific answer to your question. But I just switched Kaos to RCYT28 like 3 weeks ago. His eyes used to drain a lot, and now they don't, and his coat looks and feels 100x better on it. Although he is a little itchy on it as well. I used some hot spot shampoo from petsmart. I don't have the name atm but I used like twice and hes doing much better. |
huh, her eyes and skin are not doing good and i am thinking it's the RCYT28 since itchiness is a common side effect i've read about here on YT :/ i do agree beside the itchiness and runny eyes she coat is very nice and shiney, much more so than other cotton coated dogs [she feels a lot like a poodle! just not curly lol] Is Hot Spot the brand? We only have one petstore in town outside of WalMart, so I'll have to take a look! She came with "Mane&Tail" shampoo lol |
3 Attachment(s) Ok, what great timing....I was just going to start a thread on a shampoo I found a pet boutique/spa salon when I was in MD a few weeks ago and I have to tell you...I LOVE it for my girl. Zhoie will be 3 in January and is a cotton coat. I have try tons of the best of the best shampoos and conditioners. I've an entire bathroom cabinet to prove it...just sayin;) Zhoie was kinda itching a few weeks back after a few day from her bath but before the weekend when it was time for another bath...so I was thinking, so seasonal allergies. Anyway, I go in the dog spa and talk with the owner/groomer, she suggested Comfy Dog Oatmeal Conditioning Shampoo for Dry and Itchy Skin by happytails. OMgosh, it is the most wonderful product I have tried yet. I don't want to jinx us, but no itching what-so-ever. You don't use a separate conditioner nor do I need a detangler...it's all in this one products. It's the first product I have found that truly gives her cotton coat SHINE and it last all week until her next bath. it's all natural and smells like peppermint. Here's a couple of pictures after using it...hope you can see her shine. I'm amazed. |
Oh, and even the long hair on her legs and belly doesn't tangle even wearing clothes. For her eyes, I use my trimmers and keep the enter corners tipped out. I found when the hair gets in her eyes, it really causes them to water. Here's the link I ordered some butter from too for deep conditioning once in awhile. http://www.happytailsspa.com/site/index.html |
Cotton coat? Can someone explain cotton coat to me? |

Oh, I think it may run more in the dark coated dogs too...not positive but seems that way. |
My Prada is my cotton coat yorkie and she also has a problem with her eyes having lots of discharge, I have to clean them with calm eyes every other day, she is black and tan and matts very easy, so I keep her cut short, she does not have one silky hair in he body or head..LOL:p she does gets a teaspoon of coconut oil every other day in her food.. |
Oh Perrella! That is amazing, Zhoie looks almost silky!! Do you happen to know if cotton coats loose a li'l more hair than silky coat? I find that Maci always has more hair than I expect in her brush when I'm done brushing her. Layotte... not all yorkies have the "human hair" coats that are silky/thin/shiney etc. some yorkies end up with cotton coats that are usually wavy/thick/soft and tangle/matte easier. there are also some yorkies that a considered wire hair/red legged. Yorkies can fall out of standard for a lot of reasons just from a throwback gene to poor breeding. No matter what we love 'em all |
Also Parelle... Maci is the same way, she has a silky head/neck but her body is cotton. |

When I went into the doggie spa, I only picked up the Confy Dog shampoo, but when I found I love it so much, I found their link and ordered the Itchy Trio pack with has the shampoo, a spray for brushing and the butter. I have used the butter I time to deep condition and was so amazed with it too. |
1 Attachment(s) Here's a picture of my cotton coat Prada she has a very soft cotton like hair, and LOTS of it, very thick coat, black and tan... http://i126.photobucket.com/albums/p...ture003-14.jpg |

thank you, she is my spoiled girl, I got her for my birthday, a friend of a friend had the litter and I had to have her, even tho I knew she was not from the best breeding stock..:p I just knew I had her for my forever pet..:) she is what the breeder called a teddy bear face yorkie.. |
I use RCYT Puppy 29, with no problems for Ginny Joy and Abba. Gracie eats RCYT 28, I think this food helps with her bad breath, which is better now. She has a coat that mats easy. I also use Oatmeal shampoo on her which makes it less trouble to comb out and fewer tangels. Rubin( my old guy) is on SD he does not like RC. Lily the Lab is on BB. I use Mane and Tail on Rubin and the puppies they have beautiful silky coats. |
Comfy Dog Oatmeal Shampoo Here is where I order it from. |
Thanks Teresa :D I wish Maci did have a silky coat for the sake of management but she sure is sooo soft and I love cuddling her haha. |
Thanks Thanks for the information. New to the Yorkie world and was just wondering! |

Yeah I'm sure she has a soft coat... If she could have soft and silky hair on her body that could be a possibility lol but her signs point to soft. Very thick hair, belly mattes like crazy, she doesn't have a natural part, she is curly when wet, a wavy mess when dry lol. But she does have some shine to her coat! Her head/face are wonderfully silky :) Not sure why her coat shines.., we use mane N tail products and feed rcyt28 but are switching to acana. Will see if the shine goes away! Also her black hair on her body has a more brown undertone, while she has blue undertone on her ears/face/rear where there is any blacks and silver |
I use Harry Barker Oatmeal Shampoo and Conditioner... it is USA made (if you take that into consideration), it's concentrated but I use it full strength, it smells wonderful and lasts the week until their next bath. They also make Prickly Pear 2in1 for hot spots, flea dermatitis, and scaly skin; and Shea Butter 2in1 for extra sensitive skin. In addition to allergens, runny eyes can be caused by diet... even on a highly rated, holistic food, my girls eyes are producing a lot of goo. |

This shampoo is the best her coat has ever felt and no tangles even with close...amazes me. I am tempted to grow her back out some for winter just to see how it does on this shampoo and to give her a little warmth. |

I wonder if Maci will do the same as Zhoie and kinda thin and straighten out lol.. that would be a miracle! And nope no matting anywhere but the belly! Thank goodness. I feel like the body is a mix of silk and cotton... she's just a big oddball :P |

Oh, don't get me wrong, if I would grow her back coat out...she would be a poof and look hugh I'm sure. I'm telling you, this shampoo has worked wonders on her coat. Keeping my fingers crossed it will only get better. |

Oh, and when she was younger with the brownish reddish look to her coat, it looked like her coat had split ends/broke. But when her hormones leveled out that improved to. |
