Mina's best friend
 

Skittles is our red poodle,he is a lovely boy and so very sweet. Our vet found a heart murmur two weeks ago,he wasn't born with it. He will soon be 10yrs old at 10lbs. I noticed that he was coughing more and more over the past two weeks. So today we did bloodwork and xrays. His liver count is a bit high,he is anemic,but his new redblood cell count is not low,he isn't bleeding inturnally. His heart is round and enlarged enough to take up some of the space that his lungs should be getting.
This is Mina's best friend! He is so good to play with her all she wants,he will take the end of a stuffed toy and drag Mina all over the house with it,they play tug a war with rope and he will even make the ends of the chewies soft for her and then give them to her.
My heart is broken over this,Skittles is my daughters dog and truthfully he was her first love,she is now engaged to a very nice young man. Skittles stayed with us when his mommy moved because he has always been with his two half brothers and she didn't want to take him away from them. He is half brother to my dog that died suddenly last March.
Our vet is taking very good care of Skittles and is a very kind man. I just needed someone to listen to our very sad news.

My prayers are going up right now. Having my sisters add Skittles to their prayer list too. I have two wonderful sisters, one raises tiny toy poodles. They are her world and of course, we all love them. My other sister has Chihuahuas and Yorkies. I have Yorkies and a Lab but love the Poos and Wawas too. Ok I confess, I love almost all dogs regardless of breed, color or size.

Skittles half brother and twin to my dog that has passed will be going to the vet next week for the same symptoms.
Thank you for your prayers. We also love all of our dogs. I have always had poodles until my last baby passed and I got Mina (yorkie). We also have a chi and pom.
Its been kind of a tuff day.

Poor fellow. Did the vet say that they can treat it? I know there are medications that can help and possibly give him a few more fairly good years. I hope he responds well for you and your baby's sake.

I'm so sorry that Skittles is sick. I will add him to my prayers.

There is a med that he can take to make his heart pump more effecently,but right now his liver envymes are way up for some reason. We dont know why,he had been taking Temeral-P but has been off of all meds for 5weeks.

The vet thinks that the anemia is due to a lowgrade infection,although his white count isnt really up. He said that the antibiotic will help that and can actually help his liver,so 10days of that and then in 14 days he will get more blood work and we will decide what to do from there.

The daughter that he sleeps with propped him up on a pillow last night,because he was breathing very shallow,she said that it helped alot.
He is very tired today,he didn't even run the fence line with the neighbors dog this morning. He did still bark and say good morning to all of the neighborhood dogs,who always answer back and he was very happy to see Mina this morning.

I know the fluid can build up in the lungs with this problem so I hope they can get him on something soon. Propping him up will help keep the fluid level down. If it gets worse I would let the vet know as they can pull off some fluid to make him more comfortable. My prayers are with you.

An update on Skittles: He finished his antibiotics and we waited a few more days. The vet did bloodwork today and we got some good news. His liver enzymes are back to normal range and he is nolonger anemic. Apparently the vet was correct and he has had a lowgrade infection. Sense his bloodwork is back to normal we are able to start him on a medication to help his heart pump more effecently. I will wait until tomarrow morning to start the meds just incase there is a reaction to it of any kind.
